Mailbag: Can Mariners win close ones?
Beat reporter Jim Street answers Mariners fans' questions

For the first time in four seasons, the Mariners reach the stretch run of the
regular season competing for one of two available playoff spots -- the
American League West championship and the Wild Card. Inquiring minds want to
know: Can the starting rotation step up? Can closer J.J. Putz continue his
mastery? There are so many questions, and that's where we come in. If you
have a question, send it in and we'll try to answer it for you in the mailbag.

The Mariners have been hitting more long balls this season, and I was
wondering what is the longest home run hit at Safeco Field. I am guessing it
was Adrian Beltre's 480-something-footer against the Red Sox in 2005.

There is no official record of who hit the longest home run at Safeco Field,
but the longest this season was the 462-foot blast Raul Ibanez hit on June 20
against Pirates reliever Dan Kolb. There have been more than 40 home runs hit
into the upper deck in left field, but Mo Vaughn and Carlos Delgado are the
only two batters to reach the upper deck in right field.

How do the Mariners stack up with the rest of the AL and MLB in one-run games
and runners left on base?

As of last Saturday, the Mariners were 21-17 in one-run games, which was among
the best in the AL. The Tigers (20-15) were five games above .500 while the
Orioles were the worst at 10-23. In the NL, the Diamondbacks were tops with a
27-16 record in one-run games, while the Phillies were just 8-19. The Mariners
stranded 838 runners in their first 119 games, the eighth-highest total in the
AL. Also, 13 of the 16 NL teams had stranded more runners than Seattle.

Is it considered an unearned run if the pitcher is the one that makes the
error allowing a run to score?

When a batter reaches base on an error, and the miscue leads to a run being
scored, when it otherwise wouldn't have scored, it becomes an unearned run --
regardless who commits the error. So, yes it is an unearned run if the pitcher
commits the error. Also, if a runner scores on a passed ball by the catcher,
and would not have otherwise scored in the inning, it is an unearned run.
However, it is an earned run if the runner scores on a wild pitch. The official
scorer recreates each inning to determine which runs are earned and unearned.

Will Ichiro reach 3,000 career hits, and if so what year do you think he'll
reach it?

That's a tough one to answer because of so many variables. However, if Ichiro
finishes this season with 225 hits, he would have 1,579 hits in his seven-year
MLB career -- an average of 226 hits per season. If he maintained that pace,
he would need slightly more than six more full seasons to reach the 3,000-hit
mark, making him close to 40 years of age. After much calculation, my guess
is that he will reach the 3,000-hit plateau on June 26, 2014. You heard it
here first.

With Barry Bonds' contract expiring at the end of the season, rumors have it
that he may end up in the American League. Do you think he would be a good fit
on the Seattle roster as a DH?

With all the controversy surrounding the new all-time home run king, I doubt
that he would be a "good fit" on the Mariners roster -- as the designated
hitter or otherwise. In my wildest dreams, I can't envision Bonds playing for
the Mariners next season -- or any season.

When I was young, I had a baseball coach tell me that in high school Richie
Sexson once hit a pop fly so high that he got to second base before the left
fielder caught it. I was wondering if you knew if there was any truth to that
story?

Even if Sexson had as much speed as Ichiro, which he doesn't, it's unlikely
that he could hit a ball high enough to reach second base before any
outfielder caught the ball. Your coach was pulling your leg.
別在相信獅子的鬃毛，就算把兒子換成火星人都辦不到
你教練一定是把你的腿換上去囉！ XD

Is there a buyout option on Sexson's contract for 2008? If so, what is the
amount, and would it be a viable option?

There is no buyout option in Sexson's contract. He is guaranteed $14 million
in 2008, the final year of a four-year deal he signed as a free agent prior
to the 2004 season.

In the third game in Baltimore, George Sherrill came into the game in the seven
th inning and pitched to only two or three batters. He was replaced with a
right-handed pitcher. Then he came in again in the eighth and closed out the
game. I didn't think a player could enter the game twice. What is the
explanation?

The left-hander that pitched in the seventh inning actually was Ryan
Rowland-Smith, not Sherrill. Rowland-Smith was replaced by right-hander
Sean Green after facing one batter in that inning and Sherrill replaced Green
with one out in the eighth inning. Any player, pitcher or otherwise, is not
allowed to return to a game after being removed.

Do you think John McLaren will ever have the lineup with all the young guys
playing, with the exception of Ichiro leading off? I just think maybe it
would show the front office and fans in Seattle what the young guys can do.

Has a batter ever batted out of turn? What happens if he does?

It has happened quite often over the years. According to rule 6.07, "Anyone bat
ting out of turn shall be called out, on appeal, when he fails to bat in his
proper turn and another batter completes an at-bat in his place. When an
improper batter becomes a runner, or makes an out, and the defensive team
appeals to the umpire before the first pitch to the next batter of either team,
or before any play or attempted play, the umpire shall (1) declare the proper
batter out; and (2) nullify any advance or score made because of a ball batted
by the improper batter or because of the improper batter's advance to first
base on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter or otherwise. If a
runner advances while the improper batter is at bat, on a stolen base, balk,
wild pitch or passed ball, such advance is legal."

Reed, acquired from the White Sox in the Freddy Garcia trade on June 27, 2004,
has spent the entire '07 season with Triple-A Tacoma. In his first 118 games,
Reed was batting .286 (140-for-489) with 11 home runs, 54 RBIs, 12 stolen bases
and one error. He is a candidate to be promoted after Sept. 1, when MLB rosters
can be expanded to 40 players.
