DECISIVE DAY FOR MAKAAY TRANSFER

German champions Bayern Munich want an answer today of Deportivo to the
question whether the Galician club will accept their bid for Dutch striker
Roy Makaay. The numbers involved remain unclear, but it seems that the Germans
have raised their initial bid of 15 million Euro + a player to a current (and
final) bid of 18 million Euro.

Whatever their bid contains, the answer of Deportivo will be “no”. With
knowledge about the current transfermarkt, with (for example) Veron switching
between Manchester United and Chelsea for 20 million Euro, Deportivo know they
have gold in their hands with European topscorer Roy Makaay. Only by goals
matches are won, and that’s the speciality of Makaay. Therefore, Deportivo
president Lendoiro doesn’t want to “give away” Makaay for a transfersum
under 24 million Euro.

This means that the negotiation game between Hoeness and Rummenigge on one side
and Deportivo president Lendoiro on the other side will become deadlocked, and
either side will have to make a move. Roy Makaay wants to play for the German
club, and their directors more or less have promised their supporters to sign
him. But Lendoiro stands firm and doesn’t want to give in.

As the interest of Valencia and Barcelona has faded away, Makaay will play next
season at either Deportivo or Bayern Munich. But Lendoiro made clear that
“clubs interested in having Makaay should treat him like a great player,
because he’s the current Spanish and European topscorer. We don’t want to get
rid of him, and if clubs want to sign him they should pay for what he’s
worth”. Now the initiative will be at Bayern Munich, because they will have to
decide to cancel the transfer or to raise their bid.
