Checkatrade Trophy report: Newport 3 Chelsea 0

25 Sep 2018

Our development squad went down to a defeat on the road for the first time
this season as they were beaten 3-0 by Newport County at Rodney Parade.

Joe Edwards's side had beaten Swindon Town by a comprehensive 4-0
scoreline in their opening Checkatrade Trophy game of the season but
failed to find the same ruthlessness in front of goal in Wales as they had
in Wiltshire. Jamille Matt headed the hosts into a 2-0 lead with goals
either side of the interval before substitute Antoine Semenyo added a
third in stoppage time.

Daishawn Redan went closest for the visitors but they were unable to turn
controlled possession in periods into any notable chances at goal. Newport
join the Blues and Swindon on three points in the group.

Edwards made three changes from the side that ran out winners at West Ham
three days previously as Richard Nartey, Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Ian
Maatsen came into the team, the latter making his development squad debut
and still only 16. The 3-5-2 system was unchanged with Redan partnering
Taylor-Crossdale up front, while Nartey returned as one of the three
centre-backs alongside Joseph Colley and Marc Guehi.

Maatsen and captain Josh Grant operated in the wing-back roles, while
George McEachran, Billy Gilmour and Tariq Uwakwe comprised the midfield
trio. Newport County, currently third in League Two, made nine changes
from their weekend win at Tranmere but still lined up with an average age
four years older than their visitors, who had only one player not still a
teenager in the side.

A quiet opening 10 minutes offered little in terms of goalmouth action but
reminded the Blues they would have to defend well to take any points back
over the bridge home. Balls into the box are a much more familiar sight in
the Checkatrade Trophy compared to Premier League 2 and all three central
defenders were forced to head or strike the ball clear early on.

Redan proved a menace to league defenders in this competition last term,
netting against Lincoln City and Oxford United in the knockout round, and
it was the Dutchman who threatened most frequently in the first period for
Edwards's side. His progress down the right channel looked promising but
the defenders forced him wide before a cross into the box was cut out at
the front post.

Newport fired a warning moments later, Josh Sheehan fashioning space for
himself on the edge of the box before bending a strike narrowly beyond the
far post. Down the other end, goalkeeper Nick Townsend spilled a routine
collection on the turf and allowed Taylor-Crossdale to pounce, though the
striker's effort lacked the power to threaten the goal now guarded by two
covering defenders.

Cameron Pring caused a scare in the Blues six-yard box with a fizzing low
delivery from the left that somehow evaded both blue and gold shirts,
though it was Redan again posing problems for the Exiles with a neat turn
away from his marker and a low shot dragged just wide.

County took the lead eight minutes before the break, a result of their
growing momentum in the contest. Robbie Willmott provided a precise cross
from the right touchline and Matt met it with a close-range header that
squirmed away from Cumming and into the back of the net. The damage could
have been more severe before Edwards had the chance to regroup his players
in the dressing room, with Sheehan's effort shaving the outside of the
left upright.

The Blues had the challenge of coming from behind but their rescue mission
encountered further complications just two minutes after the restart as
Newport doubled their lead. A left-sided corner was swung into the box and
slack marking was punished as Jamaican striker Matt stooped to head in his
second of the evening.

Such moments test the resilience and mental strength of a young side so
their positive response will have encouraged Edwards on the touchline. A
number of crosses were delivered into the Welsh side's box but the story
of our night continued to be an inability to create clear opportunities,
with Townsend untroubled and under-worked.

Willmott's venomous strike flashed across Cumming's goal as the hour mark
approached and the Blues made changes in an attempt to up the ante.
Charlie Brown's introduction provided an instant spark, with the forward
picking up possession and driving into the box, where only a well-timed
tackle from Dan Butler thwarted his progress.

However, our attacking play was more productive with the striker and Tariq
Lamptey on the field, the latter scampering forward down the right flank
and generally proving difficult with his unpredictable diminutiveness. Yet
it was a move quickly initiated from defender to centre-forward that
almost brought the Blues back into the game. Guehi clipped a lovely pass
forward for Brown to run on to and the 18-year-old's low pass was almost
perfect for Redan but just in front of the stretching striker.

The best chance for the visitors came 10 minutes from time as Redan was
slid in for a one-on-one with Townsend but the keeper was off his line
quickly to make a brave save at the teenager's feet. On the break, Newport
ought to have added a third as substitute Antoine Semenyo spurned a
glorious headed chance, before Lamptey slid in to deny a certain goal at
the back post in the final minutes.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Michael Flynn's team did make it
3-0 as Semenyo made amends for his earlier miss by finding the bottom
corner with a well-hit drive. The result leaves Edwards's side with three
points on the board in Checkatrade Trophy Southern Group C ahead of their
final game at Plymouth Argyle next month.

They return to action in PL2 this weekend with a noon kick-off at
Aldershot against Liverpool. Tickets can be bought on the gate priced at
just £3 for adults and £1 for juniors/seniors.

Checkatrade Trophy reaction: Learning experience

26 Sep 2018

Joe Edwards urged his young players to learn lessons from their defeat in
the Checkatrade Trophy last night (Tuesday).

The Blues were beaten 3-0 away at Newport County, with two headed goals
from Jamille Matt either side of half-time proving decisive. While Edwards
was encouraged by certain aspects of the performance, he claimed it was
important for the team to use the experience in a positive way.

'I thought our performance for 70 minutes on the whole was pretty good,'
said the manager after the game in Wales. 'Newport were very aggressive,
they were willing to work and were set up well to try to stop us playing
football.

'It takes a lot of bravery for our boys to still try and build from the
back in those circumstances but we also mixed it up well and were a bit
more direct at times. We had decent control in the game for spells, which
isn't easy to come and do against this Newport team because they're a
strong side.

'We did a lot of good things for large portions of the game so we feel the
3-0 scoreline is harsh but this is a learning experience for our boys.
Sometimes in this competition, I learn more about a player in one game
than in four or five other games that they play in.'

Our reaction to going behind was positive and rallying, though a lack of
incisiveness in the final third meant the County keeper was untroubled and
under-worked. Edwards, who turns 32 today, expressed frustration at the
cheap concession of goals in our own 18-yard box and a period in the
second half when heads dropped, though he admitted learning often comes
amid difficult situations.

'We conceded some soft goals but our reaction both times was decent,' he
continued. 'We went in at half-time 1-0 down but pretty pleased with what
we were doing and confident we could turn it round but then we committed
the cardinal sin of conceding early on from a set-play. Sometimes you
concede from good quality set-plays but from our opinion that wasn't good
enough defensively.

'Again we showed a bit of resilience initially from the goal and reacted
well but as the clock was ticking, our belief started to fade. We were
moving the ball around and having a lot of possession without really
hurting them too much and there was a 15-minute spell where we looked like
we felt sorry for ourselves.

'We're disappointed but sometimes you need disappointment to properly take
the lesson in. For as well as we did for 70 minutes, we've got to be
better around the box and stay stronger mentally in the latter stages of
games that we're finding tough.'

The development squad will be looking to bounce back this weekend with a
Premier League 2 game against Liverpool at Aldershot. Tickets can be
bought on the gate priced at just £3 for adults and £1 for
juniors/seniors.
