Allen Iverson made $28.9 million in 2009
The economy, it seems, took a chunk out of the country's highest-paid athletes
this year. According to Sports Illustrated, which released its annual
compilation of the 50 richest sports stars, the average earnings of those on
the list dropped $1.5 million from a year ago.
Not surprising, Tiger Woods remains at the top -- he made $99,737,626 despite
missing much of the season because of knee surgery and despite losing Buick as
a sponsor. Fellow PGA Tour golfer Phil Mickelson kept his No. 2 spot from a
year ago with the tidy sum of $52,950,356.
Both Woods and Mickelson earned far more in endorsements than winnings, a
pattern that doesn't hold in team sports -- except for LeBron James, whose
endorsements ($28 million) nearly doubled his salary ($14,410,581), and Peyton
Manning, whose NFL earnings ($14.5 million) equaled his money from sponsors
($13 million). This shouldn't surprise anyone, considering James and Manning
are arguably the two most marketable athletes in team sports.
But this may surprise you: Allen Iverson is eighth on the list -- the
same Allen Iverson who couldn't finish around the basket, was rarely seen on
national television hawking products and generally spent his time alienating
yet another fan base (that would be Detroit, of course).
Iverson -- the only Detroit player among the top 50 -- made $28,937,500, almost
$2 million more than 10th-place Manning, and some $400,000 more than another
fading star, Derek Jeter, whose $28.5 million ($8.5 million of which came
from endorsements) was enough to place him ninth on the list.
Also in the top 10 are Alex Rodriguez at No. 4 ($39 million) followed by
Shaquille O'Neal ($35 million), Kevin Garnett ($34,750,000) and Kobe Bryant,
whose $31,262,500 was good enough for seventh on the list.
Once again, basketball players dominated the top 50 with 22 players -- nine
of whom earned at least $20 million. Baseball put 14 players on the list;
football added nine and NASCAR two -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 11) and Jeff
Gordon (No. 21), proving once again that winning doesn't necessarily equate to
earning.
Consider Steve Francis, an NBA shooting guard who cracked the top 25 and didn't
play a minute last season. He made $20,362,275.
