International Cup report: Chelsea 1 Swansea 2
Thu 22 Dec 2016
Our development squad ended their run in the Premier League International
Cup following defeat at Aldershot this evening (Thursday).
Requiring a win to progress, Adi Viveash's side took the lead before the
break courtesy of a super finish from Josimar Quintero, his fourth goal of
the season. However, a dubious penalty handed Swansea City the opportunity
to level and Botti Biabi beat Bradley Collins from the spot, before
substitute Daniel James's strike won it for Swansea late on. The Welshmen
finish second in Group D on seven points, with Chelsea four points back in
third.
Viveash made four changes from last week's defeat to Dinamo Zagreb, with
Dominic Solanke (pictured top) starting for the first time since last
month's league victory over Southampton. The 19-year-old striker was
supported in attack by Mason Mount and Quintero, with Mount continuing his
run of featuring in every development squad game so far this term.
Mukhtar Ali returned alongside Kyle Scott deeper in midfield, with Dujon
Sterling and Jay Dasilva operating at right wing-back and left wing-back
respectively as Viveash returned to a 3-4-3 formation. Collins lined up in
goal behind a back three of captain Fankaty Dabo, Joseph Colley and Trevoh
Chalobah.
The Blues knew coming into the contest that only a victory would see them
retain any hopes of advancing from the group stage of the European
competition, with Dinamo Zagreb having secured top spot in Group D earlier
in the week and only the group winners guaranteed progress. It meant this
clash was effectively a play-off for second place and, with only the two
best runners-up from the six groups making the quarter-finals, Viveash's
side were also reliant on results elsewhere going their way.
Solanke was the man on the end of our two only real chances of note in the
opening stages, his back-post header from Mount's corner deflected wide
before a low strike flew off-target following strong hold-up play against
the visiting centre-backs.
Down the other end, Collins comfortably gathered a header from Keston
Davies before working more impressively to stand tall and parry Owain
Jones's effort after good work from Botti Biabi up front.
The hosts edged control of possession but lacked the tempo or incisive
final pass to cut through the Swansea defence. Scott, on his 19th
birthday, found Quintero with a clever ball over the top but the
Ecuadorean's header towards Solanke was cut out and the danger cleared.
Adnan Maric's curling free-kick looped narrowly over Collins's crossbar
before the deadlock was broken 11 minutes before the break.
The celebrations were Chelsea's as Quintero and Mount combined to great
effect, advancing forward from centre to right before the former was
played into space on the overlap. Demonstrating composure and great skill,
his finish was accomplished and the ball nestled into the far corner
beyond the diving reach of Swansea's over-age goalkeeper, 25-year-old Mark
Birighitti.
Viveash's side ended the first half strongly and could have doubled their
advantage in the moments before the break. Sterling was denied from close
range by an excellent reaction save from Birighitti after Chalobah had won
a header in the box, before Chalobah went close with two further headers
in stoppage time. The first was pushed round the post by the keeper and
the second arrowed narrowly over.
A bizarre penalty decision swung the momentum in favour of the visitors
eight minutes after the restart as the referee awarded a Swansea spot-kick
for an apparent foul by Chalobah on half-time substitute James, despite
the lack of appeals from the visitors. Biabi stepped up and slammed the
ball straight down the middle from 12 yards for the equaliser.
The Swans then carved out a great chance to take the lead following
progress down the right and a teasing low delivery into the box by James,
though Jones skied the finish high over the bar. Viveash introduced
attacking reinforcements in response as Ike Ugbo and Miro Muheim came on
but the tempo of the game slowed with a series of stoppages and changes
around the hour mark.
It wasn't until the 78th minute that the Blues came close to restoring
their lead as substitute Ugbo got on the end of a dangerous free-kick
delivery from Mount. His header looked destined for the bottom corner but
Birighitti was once again equal to it and pushed the ball behind for a
corner. From the resulting set-piece, Chalobah fired acrobatically towards
goal but could not keep his effort down to hit the target.
Dabo was twice required to display accomplished defending skills in the
closing moments, clearing a dangerous cross from James before using his
body cleverly to shield the ball back to his goalkeeper as the visitors
threatened. However, the home skipper could do nothing to prevent Swansea
striking ahead four minutes from time as James's low drive deflected
generously off Sterling, wrong-footing Collins and diverting into the back
of the net.
Mount's bending shot dropped just over as the hosts pushed for a leveller
in the dying minutes but they were ultimately unable to overturn the
scoreline. The result means they exit the International Cup following a
win and two defeats in the group stage. Academy action now pauses for a
Christmas break before the development squad return with a Premier League
2 trip to Tottenham on Friday 6 January.
