Our Under-21s secured a draw with a late equaliser in their opening
Premier League International Cup match this evening (Friday).


A tight first half ended goalless before the Germans grabbed the opener
just after the hour mark through striker Mario Rodriguez from close range.
It looked like that would be the winner but Izzy Brown struck with a
looping header in the 89th-minute to give the hosts a deserved point.


== Team news ==


Under-21 manager Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that beat
Sunderland 3-0 last time out, with defender Dion Conroy returning to make
his first competitive start in nine months after a long injury absence. He
was joined in the back four by Andreas Christensen, Fankaty Dabo and
Nathan Ake, protecting Mitchell Beeney in goal.


Lewis Baker also returned from injury to feature from the start alongside
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and captain Jordan Houghton in midfield. Izzy Brown led
the line up front supported from out wide by John Swift and Reece Mitchell.


== First half ==


The visitors from Germany started brightly and were thwarting Chelsea's
build-up play from the back by pressing high with both of their strikers.
Kevin Holzweiler fired over with the game's first sight at goal before
Swift carved out a promising opportunity for Loftus-Cheek, with an
excellent cross from the right but the midfielder couldn't bring the ball
sufficiently under control.


Baker tested Niklas Bolten in the Gladbach goal with a shot from range
that was comfortably gathered before a period of Chelsea pressure, the
young Blues moving the ball more quickly in possession. Mitchell advanced
dangerously into the box from the left channel and fizzed in a cross but
neither Swift nor Ake could react quickly enough to turn the loose ball
towards goal.


Gladbach threatened with their first corner of the game as the interval
approached but defender Steffen Nkausah's header lacked the power and
direction to trouble Beeney. At the other end, Baker fired a free kick
from 20 yards narrowly over the bar but there was to be no breakthrough
for either side before the interval.


== Second half ==


Viveash made a switch at the break that saw the introduction of Jeremie
Boga in place of Loftus-Cheek and the change spurred his side into a good
start. Baker's free-kick from 30 yards failed to trouble Bolten but
Mitchell fared better moments later, cutting in from the left flank and
curling an effort towards the far corner that the goalkeeper did well to
push away to safety.


Nkausah did well to divert Houghton's fierce drive behind after good work
from Brown to bring the midfielder into the game in a promising attacking
position, but the opening goal arrived after an hour. It was the German
side celebrating as a quick break forward down the right caught the Blues
out and, following an initial save from Beeney and a goalmouth scramble,
Mario Rodriguez was able to prod the loose ball over the line.


The hosts responded well and almost levelled within a few minutes as
Boga's floated free-kick was headed towards goal by Brown, although the
striker's looping header hit the top of the crossbar and bounced clear
from danger. Substitute Kasey Palmer then had an instant impact as he
stung the palms of Bolten with a rasping drive.


Gladbach defended deep and looked to hit on the counter-attack for the
remaining quarter of an hour, while Viveash's side took more chances as
they pushed forward. Dabo's deep floated cross from the right was inviting
for Brown but his header arrowed just wide. However the number nine made
no mistake at the death as he helped grab a point for his side.


Bolten initially thwarted him with a great save with his legs, however the
ball flew up into the air and invited the striker and the goalkeeper to
battle again as it dropped dangerously. Brown was the winner of that duel,
rising highest to nod the ball over the goalkeeper and into the empty net.


That spurred Chelsea on to a late flurry of chances, with Palmer denied by
Bolten and then Mitchell prodding inches past the far post as he escaped
in behind in stoppage time, yet there was to be no winner.


The final action of the year for the Academy is on Tuesday as the
Under-21s entertain Norwich City at AFC Wimbledon in their second
International Cup group match.


== Manager reaction ==


Viveash reflected back on a tight game but praised his side's
never-say-die attitude to come from behind on a night of development for
his players.


Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, he said: 'This
tournament is all about learning and it was good for some of the older
boys to get the experience of playing in Europe tonight. We had a few boys
coming back from long-term injuries and a few coming back from little
absences so it was a good night for the likes of Dion, Reece, Nathan and
Lewis.


'I felt we lacked a little bit of energy in midfield at times and their
goal came about after we got caught in possession and the opposition
countered on us well, but credit to the lads because they didn't accept
defeat after going 1-0 down. Izzy's goal was a little bit fortuitous but
we gambled a bit to get back into the game, we switched him over to the
left because we felt he could get in behind their number seven and that's
how the goal came about.


'It's a night when we've got good minutes in legs and it was interesting
to see another German side after the games against Schalke. I thought a
draw was a fair result.'
