Mourinho is the best coach I have worked with... but I had to join Everton
to play and improve, admits Lukaku
By John Edwards - PUBLISHED: 21:13 GMT, 3 September 2013
Romelu Lukaku insisted he was right to choose Everton over West Bromwich
Albion but admitted he was only told he was being loaned out again four
hours before the transfer window shut.
Chelsea's Belgian striker was still getting over the miss that gave Bayern
Munich a penalty shoot-out win in the Super Cup when a phone call out of
the blue left him pondering a second successive season on loan.
Though he had been assured he would be given the chance to challenge for a
place at Chelsea, he was adamant he bore no grudge towards manager Jose
Mourinho, as he reflected on a hectic end to deadline day on Monday.
'I was sitting in my hotel room in Brussels when the phone went to tell me
I was going out on loan again,' he said, ahead of Belgium's World Cup
qualifier with Scotland. 'It was 7 pm, and that was the first I knew of
it. There had not been a mention of it before then, but after speaking to
my parents, I decided to take the plunge.
'I talked to the manager as well, and while what he said was confidential,
it just underlined that he is the best coach I have worked with. Some beat
about the bush, but he comes out straight and tells you what he thinks. As
a player, that is what you want.
'The important thing, at 20, is to be playing, and while West Brom was an
option, Everton was a better one. There are a few things I need to improve
in my game, and Everton's footballing approach and possession play can be
perfect for me.
'My movement and runs to the far post and near post could be better, and I
have already had a good, long conversation with the manager Roberto
Martinez about that. I've also known Kevin Mirallas since I was 14, and
that should help. We talked about it (the loan move) all last night.'
With Chelsea next up at Goodison Park a week on Saturday, and Lukaku
ineligible under the terms of his loan, his Everton debut will be placed
on hold. He doesn't mind waiting, though, after sensing a place on the
bench was the best he could hope for at Stamford Bridge.
'Samuel Eto'o signing for Chelsea didn't influence my decision, because I
was already behind Fernando Torres in the pecking order anyway,' he said.
'I am looking forward to playing again, and that penalty miss against
Bayern has not affected my confidence. I drove straight home afterwards,
because I had to clear my head. It was the worst thing that could have
happened to me, but I was able to smile again the next day. My team-mates
talked to me a lot at the time, and that helped.'
