BOSTON — Four people were tossed from Fenway Park Wednesday night after they
unfurled a banner from the Green Monster proclaiming “racism is as American
as baseball,” according to reports.

The black-and-white sign was displayed during the fourth inning of the game
between the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. It was removed by
security a few minutes later.

The foursome was ejected because there is a rule against hanging signs,
according to the Boston Globe.

“During the fourth inning of tonight’s game, four fans unfurled a banner
over the left field wall in violation of the club’s policy prohibiting signs
of any kind to be hung or affixed to the ballpark,” Red Sox spokesman Zineb
Curran confirmed in a statement to NBC.

On Twitter, a group called Boston Antifa claimed responsibility for the
stunt, writing “Another Boston Antifa victory at the Red Sox game tonight.
We have been on fire all summer!”

This is at least the second time this year a controversial sign has been hung
from the 37-foot left field wall known as the Green Monster, CSN New England
reported. In June, a sign with a political message regarding the Middle East
was unfurled and also removed.

CSN New England said racial slurs also were hurled at Orioles outfielder Adam
Jones during a game at Fenway earlier this season, leading the Red Sox to
institute a no-tolerance policy.
