Girardi taking wait-and-see approach with Wang
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 04/26/2013 7:09 PM ET
NEW YORK -- The photocopied sheets of the Yankees' Minor League report land
on manager Joe Girardi's desk each day, but for the moment he isn't digging
too closely into the details of Chien-Ming Wang's pitching lines for Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Wang made his second start at the Triple-A level on Thursday, allowing three
runs (one earned) on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to Columbus.
Through two starts he has compiled a 0.75 ERA.
"I'll probably start taking it seriously when I hear reports that are glowing
reports, that he's throwing the ball really well," Girardi said. "I don't
think you can make too much of two starts.
"I think you have to see how a guy responds start after start after start,
going every fifth day. We've all seen him pitch at a very high level. If he
can get back to close to that, he becomes a viable option for us."
Wang, 33, signed with the Yanks this spring after a successful turn in the
World Baseball Classic with Chinese Taipei. A 19-game winner in both 2006 and
2007 with the Yankees, Wang was just 6-6 with a 4.94 ERA in 21 games (16
starts) over the last two big league seasons with the Nationals.
Wang has said that he is pitching with reduced velocity, making his command
more important. Through 12 innings of Triple-A work, he has walked two and
struck out five; there is no timetable for promoting him.
"None of us really talked about, 'We're going to look at him after five
starts,'" Girardi said. "We figure it's a guy that can give us depth. It's a
guy that has had a lot of success here. ... They signed him for depth and an
opportunity to pitch here if we need him."
Girardi also noted the success of left-hander Vidal Nuno, who has followed a
strong spring by going 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA in four starts for the RailRiders,
but said, "I'm not looking to make a change. Our organization is not looking
to make a change. We want to get guys going."
