MIAMI -
At the start of this season, it would have been easy to confuse the
Heat locker room with Gator Nation.

Three of the 15 players on the roster not only were products of the
University of Florida, but also of Gators coach Billy Donovan

Coincidence? Not to Heat coach Pat Riley.

Of the three former Gators who started the season with the Heat, power
forward Udonis Haslem and point guard Jason Williams remain. But even guard
Matt Walsh, who was cut early in the season in a roster crunch, remains on
the Heat's radar. He's likely to get an invitation after the season to the
team's summer program.

Pitino, arrived in Gainesville, there wasn't much of a pro prospectus
authored by the university.

Since Donovan took over in 1996, eight Gators have advanced to the NBA.
Before that, only six in a basketball history that dates to 1915.

To former Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, there is no coincidence that Donovan not
only has guided the Gators to a second Final Four, but also provided the NBA

"You can see from the players he recruits, the Mike Millers and the guys we

Bonner gets a chance to play [with the Raptors] and plays great.

Van Gundy's perspective resonates to Haslem.

coach, not from any players, not from anyone," Haslem said. "That attitude
and that character trickles down to his players. A Billy Donovan player is a
player that would do anything for his team and his coaches.

Those who have traversed the Gator-Heat conduit felt, at times, they were
pushed to do just that.

"It's funny how much it's the same here as it was there,'' Haslem said. "The
individual instruction was the same thing we do here, the drills. Because I
did them at the University of Florida, I can do them a lot more fluently now."

Walsh, who currently works at the IMG Academy in Sara-sota, said the
transition from Donovan's sessions to the Heat's workouts was seamless.

"They definitely prepare you like you're an NBA-level team, from the scouting

Agent Jason Levien, who represents Haslem and Walsh, expects Donovan to

"Billy does a great job in getting guys to be very skilled,'' he said.
"Udonis, even though he was a bigger guy in college, was used to handling the

What Van Gundy mostly saw in breaking in Haslem and Walsh were players with a
passion, something equally visible in a gym rat like Jason Williams.

"You just get the feeling that if those guys had not been able to play in the
NBA, they'd be playing in Europe or leagues somewhere," Van Gundy said. "And

self-made player, with an unbelievable passion."

"I think he's a great, great coach," Riley said. "And the one thing that you
