Toure operator: Fernando looks to emulate Yaya

Manchester City's first-team midfield would not look out of place in a World
XI - but for new boy Fernando one player stands head and shoulders above the
rest.

Ivorian ace Yaya Toure is the jewel in the glittering Blues crown, according
to ￡12m man Fernando.

And although he spoke to MEN Sport through an interpreter, no translation was
needed when he was asked who his midfield idol is.

A shrug of the shoulders and a smile suggested there was no doubt in his mind
before he added simply: “Yaya.”

It is easy to see why Fernando chooses Yaya over the more subtle attacking
talents of David Silva or Samir Nasri.

Toure can do as much damage if not more than that duo going forward AND
perform the holding role that Fernando has been tasked with at the Etihad.

Fernando himself is all about defensive midfield – a player who thrives on
winning a 40-60 tackle as much as Sergio Aguero might smashing in a goal.

And his favourite players growing up, a pair of Brazil hard men, give you a
clue what to expect for City this season.

“I’ve always admired Yaya,” the affable Fernando said. “But the team is
made up of great players.

“When I was growing up my favourite players were Gilberto Silva and Mauro
Silva, but now it is Yaya.”

Fernando earned the nickname The Octopus in Portugal because of the amount of
tackles he puts in makes it look like he is ‘multi-legged’.

The moniker was actually bestowed on him after a fine performance against
United in the Champions League for Porto in 2009, when he thwarted Cristiano
Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, which Blues fans will be delighted to hear.

He did well overall, although after a summer off there is clearly sharpness
to be added, plus the inevitable adjustment to the frenetic pace of the
Premier League.

“It’s been a tough tour, it got easier as the games went along, but it was
difficult,” Fernando said.

“It has been more intense (than in Portugal) and the pace is quicker.

“But I was expecting that having watched the Premier League before I came
here. But I’m getting used to it, I’m adapting.

“I knew I was facing great players when I came here, I just need to keep
working hard and I’ll prove myself.

“I win a lot of balls, like multi-legged, that’s where the Octopus nickname
came from, and hopefully I can do well.”

"我很會搶球，這就是為什麼他們稱我為多足男，希望我可以做得很好。"


Fernando added: “I know him very well, he is quick, he is strong and if we
sign him he will be a great addition to the team.”
