Davis Cup Preview

This Friday, Andy will lead the US Davis Cup team in the World Group Play-Off
against Belgium. As the host team, Belgium chose the indoor complex,
Sportplaza Leuven which houses red clay courts. Although the US team will face
a crowd nearing the 3500 seat capacity, Coach McEnroe brings a young yet
experienced team to this Davis Cup competition. Andy will be joined by James
Blake, Robby Ginepri, The Bryan Brothers and hitting partners Alex Clayton and
Sam Querrey.

In a bit of controversy Belgium's Coach Steve Martens named Olivier Rochus,
Christophe Rochus, Steve Darcis, and Kristof Vliegen to his squad. Despite
Belgium not including their highest ranked player, Xavier Malisse, in the team,
Coach McEnroe does not underestimate the Rochus brothers, or question why the
Belgians chose clay over another surface. "Well, they're small. Sometimes the
ball can get up high on them. I think on clay the ball can bounce up a bit
higher than on a hard court. Maybe that's a factor. Christophe, who hadn't had
a great year, qualified and got to the semis of Hamburg and beat Gaudio and
beat some real good players. So they're capable of playing well," McEnroe
explained at the US Open. "I mean, Olivier is a good all-court player. He can
come to net. He's got good hands. The answer to that is I'm not really sure,
but I'm not going to lose any sleep over the fact that their results are better
on hard court; I'm happy about that. But so are our results better on hard
court, too.

This will be the fourth Davis Cup meeting between the US and Belgium. The US
has been victorious in all three previous match ups most recently in 1998 in
Indianapolis. This match determines if the United States will remain in the
World Group next year and maintain eligible for the 2006 Davis Cup Title. The
United States finds itself in this pressure situation following the surprise
2-3 home defeat to Croatia in the opening round of this year's World Group.

The Play-Off will start with two singles matches on Friday, followed by the
doubles match on Saturday, and conclude with the final two singles matches on
Sunday. In a best of five, it is imperative that the United States gets off to
a good start on Friday. The draw and order of play should be announced later
this week.
