American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina has completed a permanent transfer to
Chelsea.

The 18-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the Blues, joining us
from MLS side Chicago Fire where he will return on loan to complete their
season before moving to west London at the start of 2023.

Considered one of his homeland's most promising talents, Slonina became
Chicago's youngest signing when he agreed a professional deal with the
club in 2019, aged just 14. He is also the youngest goalkeeper ever to
start an MLS match, having made his debut for the Fire at the age of 17
years and 81 days in August 2021.

That historic introduction to senior football also brought the first of
his 13 clean sheets in the MLS, as he helped secure a 0-0 draw against New
York City. The teenager has since become a regular for Chicago Fire,
playing every minute of their 2022 league campaign to date. He has made 34
appearances for the club in total.

Slonina has also represented the USA at several youth levels and received

Official, confirmed. Gabriel Slonina joins Chelsea on permanent deal,
contract valid until June 2028. Here Slonina with his agent Jaime Garcia -
Chelsea are paying $15m add-ons included. Slonina stays at Chicago Fire
until January 1.

￡12m Slonina next to be announced unless something else has snuck under
the radar. It's not normal for an 18-year-old to have played quite so many
minutes at senior level. Slonina is chasing the MLS clean sheet record
too. He was targeted when Petr Cech and Christophe Lollichon were at the
club so he had their approval (a very good sign).

Chelsea have confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper
Gabriel Slonina from MLS side Chicago Fire on a six-year deal. The
Athletic had reported that Chelsea had agreed an initial ￡8.1million
($10m) fee with the Fire for the transfer of Slonina, but that there are
add-ons within the deal to take the base fee higher.

In a similar fashion to Pulisic, Slonina seems to use the American
pronunciation of his name (Chicago media guide says sloh-NEE-nah) but the
Polish Slonina would be said differently. He'll no doubt make it clear
what he prefers in good time anyway.
