Dementieva Gives Birth To First Child
Elena Dementieva has become the newest addition to the WTA's parents' club
after giving birth to her first child, Veronika.
Since her retirement at the end of the 2010 season, former World No.3
Dementieva has stayed out of the public eye, enjoying post-tennis life with
her husband, ice hockey player Maxim Afinogenov.
The couple first met in 2004, when Afinogenov came to support Dementieva
during her run to the French Open final, and married seven years later in
Moscow.
Fittingly for Fed Cup stalwart Dementieva, Veronika arrived last Sunday,
coinciding with Russia's victory over Argentina, which confirmed their place
in next year's World Group.
Dementieva was one of the standard bearers of the first wave of Russian
players to breakthrough on the WTA, winning 16 titles and being a fixture in
the Top 10 from 2001 right up until her retirement. Although she never tasted
Grand Slam success, she was twice a losing finalist (at the 2004 French and
US Opens) and lifted Olympic gold at the Beijing Games, in 2008.
