Gachinsky gets bronze for Russia
by Evgeniya Chaykovskaya at 28/04/2011 18:09
Russia’s Artur Gachinsky won bronze in men’s skating for both programmes at
Moscow’s World Championships.
The 17-year-old cemented his place as the rising star of Russian skating with
an unexpected podium place in front of his home crowd at Megasport.
The Russian skater did a clean quadruple toeloop and two triple Axels. The
judges awarded him 163.52 points, bringing his total to 241.86 and lifting
him to third place after he lay in fourth overnight.
Gachinsky thanked the public for the kind support and admitted that the extra
month of preparation helped him.
“It is a result of our great work with Alexei Nikolayevich (Mishin) that we
did after European championship,” Gachinski said. “It is great that season
best improved by 20 points! You could say that this month of training that
appeared helped me a lot.”
Gold went to Patrick Chan, representing Canada, who beat Yevgeny Plushchenko’
s record 91.30 points from the 2010 European Championships by almost two
points in Wednesday’s short programme and coasted to victory in the free
dance.
Silver went to Japanese skater Takahiko Kozuka, who rose from sixth in the
short programme.
Three pairs within reach of medals
Thursday evening will see the pairs medals handed out - and Russia has high
hopes of more awards.
Newcomers Tatiana Volosozhar/Maxim Trankov are currently third after the
short programme, behind Qing Pang/Jian Tong of China and Germany’s Aliona
Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy.
Another Russian pair Vera Bazarova/Yuri Larionov are currently sitting in
fourth place with a clean performance (64.64 points). They are followed by
Defending World bronze medalist Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov, who finished
the short programme fifth with 62.54 points after Smirnov fell in the step
sequence.
Volosozhar/Trankov pleased with third
There is little chance of gold, as the defending World Champions Pang/Tong
posted seasons best of 74.00 points.
But Volosozhar/Trankov are also trailing second-placed Germans by 2.63 points
after a dramatic performance to “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff.
“We are pleasantly surprised. This is our first season together, with new
coaches and a whole new team”, Volosozhar told the post-event press
conference.
“For us, it is already amazing that we are Russian Champions. We try not to
think about winning. We just worked and try to feel better every day. We just
try to skate for each other and I think it works for us”, Trankov explained.
The pairs free dance gets underway at 6:30 pm on Thursday.
