Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will return to the Bundesliga after UEFA EURO
2008™ after signing for VfB Stuttgart a one-year contract.

Free transfer

The 38-year-old is leaving Arsenal FC on a free transfer after five seasons,
having lost his place to Manuel Almunia, and he tied up the Stuttgart move
before linking up with the Germany squad. Lehmann, voted best goalkeeper at
the 2006 UEFA Club Football Awards, said: "Discussions with the people at
Stuttgart have been very good from the start. I am looking forward to playing
for them and being back in the Bundesliga next season."

First choice

Lehmann previously made 329 Bundesliga appearances – and scored two goals –
for FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund either side of a short spell at AC
Milan. He won the 1997 UEFA Cup with Schalke, having helped them gain
promotion in 1990/91, and the 2001/02 Bundesliga crown with Dortmund. At
Arsenal he was part of the club's unbeaten 2003/04 Premier League triumph,
their 2005 FA Cup win and the run to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final.
Stuttgart coach Armin Veh said: "Jens Lehmann was our first choice for a
goalkeeper from the very beginning. There is no questioning his quality and
our whole team can benefit from the wealth of his experience

TENERO, Switzerland, June 3 (Reuters) - Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will
return to the Bundesliga next season after agreeing a one-year deal with VfB
Stuttgart.

"I'm delighted with the Bundesliga and with Stuttgart," Lehmann said in a
statement on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old was second choice at Arsenal for most of last season after
losing his place to Spaniard Manuel Almunia.

Lehmann's contract ran out at the end of the campaign and he had been unsure
about whether to continue playing after Euro 2008, where he will be Germany's
first choice.

"Jens Lehmann was our first pick for goalkeeper from the start," Stuttgart
coach Armin Veh said in the statement. "His qualifications are undisputed and
our entire team will benefit from his experience."

Lehmann joined Arsenal in 2003 from Borussia Dortmund, winning the title in
his first season when he played every game in Arsenal's unbeaten Premier

He signs a 12-month deal with the option of a 12-month extension at its end.

Gamberini swiftly into Italy action

Gamberini has replaced Fabio Cannavaro, who was ruled out of the tournament

Iniesta sits out as Spain take on US

SPAIN midfielder Andres Iniesta is likely to miss their final Euro 2008
warm-up against the United States in Santander today because of a stomach
upset although Fernando Torres will be available despite a minor ankle strain.

Torres missed training on Monday night after straining his right ankle but
the injury is not serious.

Pogrebnyak stays put with Russians

PAVEL Pogrebnyak will remain in Russia’s Euro 2008 squad even if his knee
injury keeps the striker out of their opening match against Spain. “He is
not going anywhere,” coach Guus Hiddink said. Pogrebnyak limped off after
scoring in a 2-1 warm-up win over Serbia.

Group foes are to avoid final clash

TEAMS who meet in the group stages cannot meet again in the final after Uefa
changed the draw format. It is particularly bad news for France, Italy,
Netherlands and Romania, who face off in a tough Group C, with the two
successful sides perhaps meeting again in the semis.

The Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will join Stuttgart after Euro 2008,
having signed a one-year contract with the 2007 German champions yesterday.
"Jens was our top candidate from the very beginning for the goalkeeper
position," the Stuttgart coach, Armin Veh, said of the 38-year-old. "His
qualities are undeniable and the whole team will benefit from his
experience."
