Tuchel excited by 'perfect addition' Lukaku
13 Aug 2021
Thomas Tuchel has explained why he was so keen to add Romelu Lukaku to his
squad this season and what he believes the Belgian will bring to the team.

Chelsea completed the signing of Lukaku from Inter Milan yesterday,
bringing the Belgian international back for his second spell at Stamford
Bridge.
Although his arrival comes too late for the striker to be involved in
tomorrow's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, Tuchel is
confident we won't have to wait long to see him making his mark with
Chelsea and explained what it is about Lukaku that appealed to him.
'We're very happy to have Romelu back in the club as an addition to our
squad,' said our head coach. 'We think in terms of personality, his speed,
power, he can hopefully be an excellent choice for us and an excellent
addition.
'He has the power, he has the physique to help us. He has the experience,
the personality, to have an instant impact in our squad. He is at the same
time a humble guy and a true team player and he cares about Chelsea.'
That point about Lukaku's bond with the club from growing up supporting the
Blues and his earlier time at the Bridge as a young player was one Tuchel
was keen the emphasise, with the 28-year-old's desire to come back to
Chelsea leaving the German confident he will be a great fit with the rest
of the squad.
'He is super hungry. It was actually very important to us that it was his
desire to re-join Chelsea and to finish his story at Chelsea in the way
that he wants to for himself. It was very important because we have a
strong group that is defined with a strong bond and a certain attitude to
be ready to help each other out and to support each other.
'We think that Romelu, having always Chelsea in his heart, is a perfect
addition to our group because he embodies all that we are proud of in this
club and in our team.'
Tuchel also explained that when looking to bolster our attack for the
2021/22 season he was looking for a certain type of striker, which he
believes he has found in Lukaku, but that our new signing's wide range of
talents will also help open up more tactical options for Chelsea.
'We were looking for a certain profile and Romelu gives us that,'
explained Tuchel. 'He feels confident to play physical, he feels confident
to play with his back towards the goal, but also he is very strong in
using his speed and pace. So this will always be a key figure in our game.

Lukaku has joined for his second spell at Chelsea a decade after his first
debut against Norwich
'To be strong in ball wins and offensive transition, this is what the
league demands and this is what we demand from ourselves, but we don't
want to be only a ball possession team, only a defensive team, a team that
only plays long balls.
'We feel that Romelu's strength is having a variety of strengths. He is
strong in the air, he will give us a new power when we cross from the
side. I don't think we need to change our style of play to make him shine.
He has charisma, he is a good age now where he is a leader and hopefully
he will be one of the leaders in our group.'

Tuchel reveals plans for Lukaku's integration and second Chelsea debut
14 Aug 2021
Romelu Lukaku is set to make his second Chelsea debut at the Emirates next
weekend after Thomas Tuchel set out the plan for the Belgian's integration
into the Blues group.

Our new striker, who completed a permanent transfer from Inter Milan on
Thursday, will be unavailable for this afternoon's Premier League opener
against Crystal Palace due to Covid-19 quarantine protocols following
travel to the UK from abroad.
He will self-isolate in the coming days before joining in training for the
first time on Monday, at the start of a week which ends with Tuchel's side
heading across the capital to take on Arsenal.
'We were not fast enough to let him play on Wednesday [in the Super Cup]
or against Crystal Palace because Romelu is still in quarantine and
following the protocols,' explained the boss.
'He will be out on Monday, do the whole training with us next week and
will play for us against Arsenal. That's the plan. If things go normal, he
will be on the pitch then.'
Tuchel believes the 28-year-old's arrival will take the pressure away from
his new attacking team-mates and is excited to work with the sort of
striker he believes suits the club perfectly.
'He is a true number nine,' he added. 'When I thought about Chelsea before
I even entered the club and had the chance to be part of it, I thought of
personalities up front like Didier Drogba and Diego Costa. This is
something that embodies Chelsea and what Chelsea stands for – strong and
physical strikers.

Lukaku sealed his return to Stamford Bridge on Thursday
'Since I worked here, I understand why there are so many physical strikers
that are so needed and so successful because the league demands it. He's a
perfect fit for Chelsea and he will take the weight off the shoulders of
our younger strikers.
'This is a huge part of the story, that he does not step away and he's
happy to make life easier for players around him. I think players like
Christian [Pulisic], Kai [Havertz] and Timo [Werner] will benefit from
him.'

Thomas Tuchel has joked about Chelsea's efforts to sign a striker this
summer having been asked about Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland, after
seeing the club bring in Romelu Lukaku.
Lukaku's £98 million ($136m) move from Inter to Stamford Bridge was
announced on Thursday after several weeks of talks to bring him back to
Chelsea.
However, for much of the summer, Chelsea were linked with signing Haaland
who looks set to stay at the Bundesliga club. Having been asked about
Haaland, Tuchel began jokingly criticising his club's efforts in the
transfer market.
"Yes, we tried to sign both and wanted Lewandowski as a No 10 in behind,"
Tuchel joked ahead of a match against Crystal Palace in the Premier
League. "Unfortunately, the board didn't listen and we only have Romelu."
"Yes, we missed a lot of opportunities," he sarcastically continued when
Lionel Messi was brought up. "That's why you find me very upset and not
wanting to continue.
"No! We had a certain profile and we are very happy with the mentality and
attitude of the group. We wanted it to stay like this. It is not a given
to have this in a group. it is precious and can be decisive in football.
"In my opinion, it is decisive and we are very careful and want to protect
it. It was not about bringing the most possible amount of players into
this group. We had to be sure that the player was good enough, in the
right state of mind and can give with his personality to improve us.
"We wanted to be as sure as we can with this transfer. There are always
doubts about transfers but we are very sure with Romelu because he knows
the club and what Chelsea is about. It is like this."
