Hingis set for return to WTA Tour
Former world number one Martina Hingis will return to professional tennis
next year more than three years since retiring from the sport.
The 25-year-old Swiss star quit at the end of 2002 after a series of
recurring injury problems.
But she said in a statement on Tuesday: "I was never happy my injuries cut my
career short and ultimately forced my decision to step away from tennis.
"I've enjoyed my time away - it's let me experience a new side of life."
She added: "I miss the game and the challenge of competing at the highest
level of tennis, and I want to gauge whether I can stay healthy and compete
against today's top players."
Hingis won a total of five Grand Slam titles during her career.

Hingis to return to WTA Tour
Martina Hingis will swap the commentary box for the court in 2006, returning
to the WTA Tour for the second time since retiring with a left ankle injury
at Filderstadt in October 2002. The advent of the power game ended the former
world number one dominance on the women's tour.
She made a one-off comeback in February, losing 1-6 6-2 6-2 to Marlene
Weingartner of Germany in the Pattaya City first round as part of a
promotional tour of Asia.
"I was never happy my injuries cut my career short and ultimately forced my
decision to step away from tennis," said the 25-year-old in a statement on
Tuesday.
"I have enjoyed my time away from the court, a period that has allowed me to
experience a different side of life.
"However, I miss the game and the challenge of competing at the highest level
of tennis, and I want to gauge whether I can stay healthy and compete against
today's top players."
Four seasons ago, Hingis first sustained injuries to her feet and the Swiss
was able to sue Italian sportswear manufacturer Sergio Tacchini.
Hingis underwent operations on her ankles in October 2001 and May 2002 but
was forced to retire aged 22.
At 5-feet 7-inches, Hingis made up for her lack of height with excellent
timing. Her superb court craft netted five major singles championship titles
and over $1 million in prize money for seven successive years.
"Martina [Hingis] has meant so much to the game of tennis, both on the court
with her results, and off the court through her continuous charity
involvement," said Phil de Picciotto, Octagon's president of athletes and
personalities.
"She had just turned 22 when injuries forced her to stop. Now, at the age of
25, with several surgeries behind her, Martina is looking forward to the
challenge of playing a competitive schedule of events."
As Hingis takes her first tentative steps back in professional tennis, other
star names Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati have yet to announce their
retirement.
Seles has been sidelined since the 2003 French Open with a foot injury, while
American compatriot Capriati had shoulder surgery in January and has yet to
return to the WTA Tour.
