There was plenty of excitement leading up to the game, there were no goals
by the final whistle, but there were three Chelsea players heavily
involved in England's meeting with Scotland at Wembley.

Billy Gilmour was handed his first Scotland start and his first
competitive action for his nation, having been given his maiden two caps
as a substitute in two warm-up friendlies by Steve Clarke, and has every
right to be pleased with his 75 minutes in which he was tidy in possession
throughout. He was named UEFA's Star of the Match.


There was an increase in Chelsea presence in Gareth Southgate's England
side too with Reece James joining Mason Mount in the side. James was one
of two changes from the Three Lions' win over Croatia, with the other
full-back switched as well, Luke Shaw coming in, and our right-back was
crucial in the England clean sheet with a goal-mouth clearance.


There was no shortage of direct midfield combat between Mount and Gilmour
at a wet Wembley, and as all Blues fans would expect, the England man was
involved in plenty of the main incidents in what proved to be an even
contest between these old rivals.

It was Scotland who had the first shot of the game which was blocked, and
it was Mount who had the first effort for England, deflected behind for a
corner. Mount took that corner and it was met by John Stones who unmarked,
headed against the near post. That was as close as either team came before
the interval.


Two minutes after England's woodwork strike, Mount had a close-range
chance of his own when he ran onto Sterling's pass after Scotland were
caught in possession, but he knocked the ball wide.

Further England openings came and went, with Phil Foden shooting wide from
an offside position and then just before the half-hour mark, a classic
Reece James cross sought out Harry Kane. The England captain at the far
post could not send the ball on target with a diving header.


Moments later, Scotland could well have taken the lead through Stephen
O'Donnell but the wing-back's sweet volley was well saved by Jordan
Pickford to ensure there were no goals before half-time.


In the third minute of the second half, Mount from 20 yards out forced a
diving save from David Marshall. It was England's only shot on target.
Fifty-five minutes in, there was a chance for James from similar range but
he flashed it past the angle of post and bar.

There was another side of James' game soon after when he moved across to
head away a Lyndon Dykes shot from in front of goal. Scotland had thought
they were about to score but it was not their last good opportunity. With
just over 10 minutes to go, Che Adams blazed a shot over at the back post.


The Three Lions could not capitalise from a goalmouth scramble in added
time so an England-Scotland clash at Wembley finished scoreless for the
first time in the fixture's long history.

Ben Chilwell was named among the England substitutes for this game but
remained unused.


A win would have qualified England for the knockout stages with a game to
spare. Now they still need to take a point when they meet Czech Republic,
who also have four points, on Tuesday. Scotland need to beat Croatia at
Hampden Park on the same night.

N'Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud featured in the France side that came from
behind to draw 1-1 with a fired-up Hungary playing in front of a capacity
home crowd.

Les Bleus were made to work hard by Hungary in temperatures above 30°C as
they fought back from going a goal down to secure a point which leaves
their chances of topping Group F in their own hands.


Kante and Giroud both created chances for France to win the game, but had
to settle for a point as the country's five-game winning streak came to an
end.


France boss Didier Deschamps, himself a former Chelsea midfielder, made
just one change to his side at left-back following the 1-0 win over
Germany in their opening game, meaning Kante was in the starting line-up
again in Budapest, while Giroud was among the substitutes, although there
was no place on the bench for Kurt Zouma.

The French made a bright start to the game despite the sweltering heat and
hostile atmosphere created inside the full stadium in the Hungarian
capital, dominating possession during a high-intensity first half which
saw plenty of strong challenges flying in.


Kante created one of France's most promising opportunities of that opening
45 minutes, when he drove forward out of midfield and beat three men
before poking the ball past the final defender, but Karim Benzema had
strayed offside.


However, right at the end of the first half, Hungary's Attila Fiola
capitalised on a defensive error by Raphal Varane and calmly slotted past
goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to give the home side a shock lead at the break.


Kante his team-mates came out strongly in the second half and just after
the hour mark they pulled level, when Kylian Mbappe's low cross was
deflected into the path of Antoine Griezmann, leaving the Barcelona man
with a simple finish.


They went straight for the second goal, with substitute Ousmane Dembele
hitting the post and Kante side-footing a first-time shot narrowly wide
from 25 yards.


As France chased the win, Giroud was introduced from the bench by
Deschamps, and was unlucky not to create a decisive goal after his clever
touch found Mbappe free in the box, but the Paris Saint-Germain forward
fired his shot straight at the goalkeeper.


A foul on Kante in the corner gave France a final chance to find a winner
in added time, but play was delayed as two Hungary defenders went down
injured, followed by a VAR check for a possible French penalty, and then
Varane headed just wide with the last attack of the game.

That meant the game finished 1-1 and France will be disappointed not to
have taken another win, but it is a result which guarantees Les Bleus will
go into their last group game occupying a top-two spot in the table,
knowing another draw against Portugal would ensure they make the next
round regardless of other results.

Kai Havertz scored and was involved in three more as Germany defeated
Portugal in a six-goal thriller.

Munich played host to arguably the most entertaining match of Euro 2020 so
far, with Havertz and Antonio Rudiger playing important roles for Germany
as they gave their chances of progressing to the knockout stages a massive
boost with victory against Portugal.


Having lost their opening game to France, the pressure was on Germany,
especially after going behind to the Portuguese, but they showed their
strength to triumph 4-2 in the end, with Havertz involved in the build-up
of all four goals, in addition to getting the third himself.


Germany coach Joachim Low kept faith with the side which lost to France,
meaning Rudiger retained his place on the left of a back three and Havertz
again formed one third of a fluid front three alongside Serge Gnabry and
Thomas Muller. Timo Werner was among the substitutes.

The home side briefly thought they had taken an early lead when Robin
Gosens acrobatically turned in Joshua Kimmich's ball at the back post, but
the goal was ruled out by VAR as the offside Gnabry was deemed to have
interfered in play with his own attempt to meet the cross.


Havertz also had Portugal worried early on with a powerful low drive from
just outside the box, but Rui Patricio just managed to get down and palm
the ball away from the bottom corner.


However, it was Portugal who took the lead with virtually their first
attack of the game. It came on a quick counter which started at a Germany
corner, Diogo Jota getting in behind Havertz on the break and squaring the
ball for Cristiano Ronaldo to tap in the opener against the run of play.


Germany continued to dominate possession after going behind, though, and
were level with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Havertz playing a
big part. When Matthias Ginter's clipped cross was put back across goal by
Gosens, Havertz and Ruben Dias were competing to reach the ball on the
edge of the six-yard box and it went in off the defender.

Amazingly, Germany were ahead just a few minutes later through another own
goal, with both Chelsea players on the pitch involved this time, as
Portugal continued to struggle with Havertz's movement in attack.


The move start with an excellently weighted pass from Rudiger to release
Gosens down the left and when the ball was chipped into the box at an
awkward height, Havertz got just about enough on his flick to keep it in
play for Kimmich. He drove a pass across goal, with Havertz and Gnabry
both poised to score before Raphael Guerreiro did the job for them when
attempting to intercept.


It could even have been more, with Rudiger not far away from finding the
net with a header from a corner, before Gnabry forced a save from
Patricio, but they had to settle for a one-goal lead at the end of a
highly entertaining first half.


It only took five minutes of the second period for Germany to extend their
lead, though, and this time Havertz did get his name on the scoresheet.
Having also been involved in the build up out on the right, he surged into
the box to meet Gosens low cross and turn into the net from close range.

The home side weren't finished, either, as Havertz's through-ball gave
Kimmich the space to chip a cross to the back post, where Gosens was
waiting to head in and make it four.


Portugal pulled one back when Rudiger couldn't prevent Jota tapping in at
the back post from a set-piece and started to apply some pressure of their
own, the Chelsea defender making a vital clearance in the six-yard box
before Renato Sanches struck the post with powerful effort from range.


After picking up a booking for an untidy tackle, Havertz was substituted
with a little less than 20 minutes remaining as Germany looked to sure
things up at the back and see out the game with their two-goal lead.


Rudiger and Co stayed strong at the back to reach the end with that lead
intact, meaning they go second in Group G, ahead of Portugal on
head-to-head record, one point behind leaders France going into their last
group game against Hungary.


In the day's evening kick-off, Cesar Azpilicueta was an unused substitute
for Spain as they drew 1-1 with Poland, when former Chelsea striker Alvaro
Morata opened the scoring in Seville before the home side were pegged back
by Robert Lewandowski's header. That result leaves Spain in third place in
Group E on two points, one point behind their next opponents Slovakia.

Wales were beaten in Rome but still claimed a top-two group finish at Euro
2020, ensuring they join Italy in the knockout round.

The Dragons' earlier work in Group A – a draw with Switzerland and
victory over Turkey – ultimately proved enough to secure a runners-up
spot behind the Italians, who secured a 1-0 win over them courtesy of a
first-half goal from Atalanta's Matteo Pessina.


Italy advance with three victories from three matches, continuing their
100 per cent winning record from qualifying. The Azzurri have now gone 11
games without conceding and 30 matches unbeaten, underlining their
credentials as contenders for the European crown.

Roberto Mancini made eight changes to his side but retained the services
of Jorginho in midfield, while Emerson Palmieri made his first appearance
at a major finals at left-back in a tweaked back four. For Wales, Ethan
Ampadu came in as the middle centre-back in a three-man defence as one of
their three alterations from last time out.


As expected, the hosts enjoyed most of the play and ended the game with 23
goal attempts, six of which were on target. The first of that half-dozen
was taken by Emerson, who was handed licence to roam forward endlessly
from left-back. The 26-year-old fired in a decent effort after 15 minutes
but saw Wales keeper Danny Ward make a comfortable stop.


The defender also saw a speculative penalty appeal waved away on the
half-hour mark, while Jorginho continued his excellent tournament form
busying himself in central areas, alongside the returning Marco Verratti
and goalscorer Pessina.


The Chelsea number five was withdrawn after 75 minutes and exited the
action with an incredible 98 per cent pass completion, alongside two key
passes and two take-ons.

He even teed up club team-mate Emerson for a decent chance in the second
half, though the full-back failed to find the target. The midfielder's
withdrawal was undoubtedly made to protect him ahead of the battles that
lie ahead.


Italy's goal came six minutes before the break when Pessina stole a march
on the Wales defenders to make first contact with Verratti's low free-kick
and steer it perfectly into the far corner. It was their seventh goal at
the tournament so far.


Yet all hope was not lost for Wales, who knew their finish as runners-up
would be safe unless Switzerland could instigate a significant goal
difference swing in beating Turkey in the other group game.


The task was made decidedly tougher 10 minutes into the second period,
however, when Ampadu was sent off after catching Federico Bernardeschi
late on the top of his foot. In the process, the 20-year-old became the
youngest player in Euros history to be shown a straight red card, though
he could count himself a little unlucky at the severity of the sanction.

Even with a man down, Wales still carried a threat and ought to have
equalised when Gareth Bale blazed over a great opportunity with a
left-footed volley. Yet Switzerland's 3-1 win in Baku meant the Welshmen
were safe in second and they can celebrate a successive appearance in the
last 16 following their run to the semi-finals in 2016.


They will now head to Amsterdam on Saturday to take on the runners-up from
Group B, which could be Russia, Finland or Denmark. Meanwhile, Italy will
be in action next at Wembley as they take on either Ukraine or Austria.
