Blues quintet help young England into final

Five Chelsea youngsters started as England reached the final at the
Under-19 European Championship in Georgia.


Captain Jay Dasilva kept his place in the team at left-back, while Reece
James came into the side for his first start at the tournament following
Trevoh Chalobah's return home with an ankle injury. Dujon Sterling moved
into a more advanced role as James lined up at right-back, while Mason
Mount and Jacob Maddox started in midfield.


England had advanced from Group B with a 100 per cent winning record and
they dominated the first-half proceedings against the Czech Republic
without finding the cutting edge to open the scoring. Dasilva went closest
to breaking the deadlock with a powerful strike that thumped the post
before the Czechs grew stronger in the contest after the restart.


Ryan Sessegnon had the ball in the back of the net but ruled out for
offside, while Sterling's strong appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears
as the clock ticked towards extra-time. The young Lions survived let-offs
of their own in the second period before Lukas Nmecha looked to have
spurned the opportunity to win the game in normal time as he headed over
from close range.


However, the Manchester City forward made amends moments later as Marcus
Edwards raced away from the left-back and delivered for him to turn past
the keeper with an improvised back-heel finish.


The 1-0 win means England will face Portugal in Saturday's final and
continues a remarkable summer for England's youngsters following success
at the Under-20 World Cup, Toulon Tournament and a runners-up finish at
the U-17 Euros.

Three of our youngsters featured from the start as England beat Portugal
2-1 to win the European Under-19 Championship final.


Mason Mount turned in another decisive display for the young Lions,
claiming assists for both goals, while Jay Dasilva captained the side from
left-back and Dujon Sterling lined up on the opposite flank. After
starting the semi-final victory over the Czech Republic, Jacob Maddox and
Reece James were unused substitutes, while Trevoh Chalobah's tournament
was cut short by injury after the group stage. All six will pick up
medals, with all but Dasilva adding to their haul of Under-18 club
silverware picked up this season.


The final in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi began in nervy fashion and
there was little to separate the two sides at the halfway point. Mount had
helped fashion the two best England opportunities, his shot from inside
the box charged down following Isaac Buckley's cutback before the
midfielder teed up Ryan Sessegnon, who fired wide.


Sterling was returned to right-back following his exertions further up the
field in the semi-final and he demonstrated his defensive speed, strength
and intelligence before the break, scampering across the field to land a
crunching tackle on Joao Filipe as the Portuguese winger advanced
dangerously.


If the first period lacked key talking points, the restart provided the
action and England were in front just five minutes into the second half.
Aston Villa defender Easah Suliman claimed the goal, nodding in the
rebound as Mount's bending free-kick bounced low and thumped the right
post.


However, the advantage lasted for just six minutes and Sterling was guilty
of a misjudgement to restore parity for Portugal. The defender watched as
a cross from the right sailed towards him at the far post before he sliced
a left-footed clearance beyond his own goalkeeper. The 17-year-old had his
head in his hands as he crouched to the ground in disbelief but Keith
Downing's side soon rallied in the manner of all good sides on the big
occasion.


As Portugal grew stronger and more dangerous, England pressing high up the
right flank forced a mistake and fashioned the chance for Mount to run
towards goal. The Chelsea Academy Player of the Year barely looked up as
he drove into the box before squaring a perfect pass for Lukas Nmecha to
tap the ball into an empty net. It was a significant moment in the final
and took Mount on to five assists, a tournament high.


The final 20 minutes were not without drama. Tayo Edun was dismissed as
England were forced to see out the final a man down and Portugal sent in a
flurry of corners as the officials played out five minutes of stoppage
time. The memory of England's Under-17 side conceding a last-minute
equaliser to Spain in their European final earlier in the summer, before
losing on penalties, loomed large. The Portuguese goalkeeper got on the
end of one final set-piece but wasted his headed opportunity and England
were left celebrating once again.


The triumph caps a remarkable summer for England's youngsters, with
Chelsea involvement prominent across the board. The Under-21s reached
their Euro semi-finals and the Under-17s were runners-up, while the
Under-20s were crowned World Cup winners and a mixed-age group retained
the Toulon Tournament.

拉瓜的最後一場小組賽中，切爾西後衛進球建功。


金盃賽每兩年舉辦一次，由中北美及加勒比地區足協成員國參加，爭奪北美洲、
中美洲和加勒比地區的冠軍。今年的賽事在美國舉行，本屆冠軍將與2019年賽事的冠
軍進行一場決戰，爭奪2021年聯合會盃的參賽資格。


美國隊在2013年獲得金盃賽的冠軍，他們在三場小組賽中拿到7分，與巴拿馬積
分相同，但東道主因為進球多而以小組頭名晉級。


米亞茲加上賽季租借效力維特斯，他在前兩場小組賽都未獲得替補出場的機會，
美國隊1-1戰平巴拿馬，3-2擊敗馬提尼克。上週六在克利夫蘭對陣尼加拉瓜的最後一
場小組賽中，他首發出現在中後衛的位置上。
