that Youkilis is a hit machine -- not a walk machine.

is in as good a groove as the man known throughout New England as

Youkilis enjoyed Thursday's off-day for the Red Sox as the owner of a
career-high 16-game hitting streak, a surge that has catapulted his batting
average to .347, which is third in the American League. He is sixth in runs,
fourth in hits, fifth in on-base percentage and, oh, by the way, 27th in walks

A few days ago, Ortiz noticed reporters swarming around Youkilis after yet
another multi-hit game, and couldn't resist having some fun with his teammate.

As imposing a presence as Big Papi is -- and as good a setup man as he might
be for the success of a No. 2 hitter -- the one thing he can't do for
Youkilis is swing the bat for him. Youkilis has done a pretty fine job of
that on his own this season, his second as Boston's everyday first baseman.

"He's been great," said Red Sox captain Jason Varitek. "His ability to let

The success Varitek speaks of is a 31-15 record, tops in the Major Leagues.
And it's the view of the standings -- not his personal statistics -- that
has Youkilis in such a good frame of mind these days.

"When you hit two home runs in a game and your team loses, it's the worst

When you go 4-for-4 and your team loses, it's great that your stats go up,
but is it really that good at the end of the day? For me, I don't like it. I
don't like losing. You ask my parents, you ask my friends, I'm competitive.
I don't like losing at all."

Youkilis is indeed a fiery competitor. Not gifted with an all-world body, he
has always been a worker. Few people around the Red Sox had any complaints
with the season Youkilis had a year ago, when he scored 100 runs, clubbed 42
doubles and had a .381 on-base percentage. But instead of letting natural
progression be the catalyst for his 2007 season, Youkilis made adjustments.

"I think I'm just not trying to think as much," Youkilis said. "I'm just
reacting more. For me, it's not thinking. For me, it's just trying to keep
it simple and usually that's the best thing to do. Keeping things simple and

One of the biggest values that Youkilis brings to the Red Sox is having the
ability to be productive in any spot in the lineup. For example, when Drew

gives you the most production. And he's on base all the time. And he has
good, long at-bats before David and Manny. I think that's a real good thing.

Youkilis would savor his success if he could, but he's too busy trying to
maintain it. Despite going deep in his first Major League game at Toronto in
May 2004 -- and basically showing he belonged from the start -- Youkilis rode
the Boston-Pawtucket shuttle for two solid years. He knew it was a numbers
game at the time. But it also serves as a reminder to Youkilis that keeps
him on his proverbial toes at all times.

specialist. You just have to realize that. At any time, you never know. You
have to play day in and day out and play hard. Play for today. You can't
worry about the future. For me that helps out a lot. I get to play baseball
for a living and I just have to keep playing day in and day out and just
have fun with it."
