ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nearly 2 ? years ago, super-agent Scott Boras negotiated on
e of the most important contracts in recent Red Sox history, helping Xander Bo
gaerts sign a six-year, $120 million contract with the club. In about 16 month
s, Boras and Bogaerts will sit down and decide whether they’ll exercise an op
t-out clause that will allow them to explore the free agent market after the 2
022 season.

By signing the deal he did, Bogaerts locked in a $120 million guarantee while
giving himself the chance to hit free agency before his age-30 season. Conside
ring Bogaerts has only gotten better -- he received MVP votes in each of the l
ast two seasons and is an All-Star again this year -- it’s almost certain tha
t he would get more than $20 million per year on the open market.


Barring a significant injury or sharp downturn, Bogaerts would be making a cur
ious decision if he does not exercise his opt-out and maximize his value when
the time comes. Speaking before Tuesday’s Red Sox-Angels game, Boras seemed t
o agree.

“I always knew Xander was going to be what Xander is,” Boras said. “All of
our metrics and algorithms that we have did that. The key to it was, for me, t
hat we could put him in free agency at a young age.”

Boras cited clients Anthony Rendon (who signed a seven-year, $245 million deal
with the Angels in Dec. 2019) and the Cubs’ Kris Bryant, (who will hit free
agency this winter) as comparable cases.

“These guys are 29, 30 years old. He’s going to be in the same category as t
hose guys,” he said. “But, in the end, that was a decision he had to make. A
nd you know what? It’s kind of working out exactly as we thought it was. He a
llowed me to wait and get the opt-out in his contract, which proved to be a ve
ry valuable decision.


“What Xander Bogaerts is to the Boston Red Sox and who he is in Major League
Baseball is a lot clearer now than it was when he signed his last contract,”
Boras said. “The point of it is, it’s really something that has given the le
ague and everyone involved the opportunity to know who he is, what he can do,
what he’s capable of and what he means to a franchise. It has proved to be so
mething of value and merit to the team and for him, as well.”

This winter’s free-agent class is stacked with top shortstops, as Javier Baez
, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story are all due to open market. As Bog
aerts awaits his own chance a year later, it’s fair to assume he will be watc
hing closely to see the kinds of deals those players sign. Boras, who said he
was open to talking to the Red Sox about a reworked deal that eliminates the o
pt-out, hinted that Bogaerts could sign a new contract this winter, effectivel
y putting himself in the mix with the quartet of star shortstops.


“Who’s to say he won’t be a part of it?” Boras asked. “The (2022 opt-out)
doesn’t stop (the Red Sox) from trying to place him in the market earlier. Y
oung guy, great player, why not?”

Boras, like many in the Red Sox organization, believes Bogaerts is underrated
-- especially defensively.

“I use the (Derek) Jeter model, because the metrics of the game are so upside
-down on how they grade defense,” Boras said. “We don’t give extra points f
or 30 in a row, balls at you. We don’t talk about the consistency going to th
e right base. Going for a ball in Oakland that prevented a run from scoring. P
lus, what shortstop hits No. 4 for a major-league team? You add in the value o
f all that kind of thing and I think anybody who watches this game knows he’s
a franchise player.

“There’s a lot of great Red Sox players, but for any of them, offensively, t
o put together these kinds of years, particularly infielders, it’s a pretty r
are performance,” Boras said.
