PL2 report: West Ham 1 Chelsea 2

22 Sep 2018

A fourth win from four on the road this season helped our development
squad rise to joint-top of the Premier League 2 table following a spirited
victory in rainy Dagenham this lunchtime (Saturday).

Joe Edwards's side started well and took the lead with just seven minutes
on the clock, Billy Gilmour converting from the penalty spot after Reece
Oxford had taken down Charlie Brown in the box. Yet their advantage was
quickly wiped out as West Ham scored a penalty of their own, won by Grady
Diangana and scored by Joe Powell.

The contest was open and swung both ways, though the Hammers were hindered
early after the restart as Tunji Akinola saw red for a second bookable
offence. It was a foolish foul and a decisive moment as the visitors grew
in stature, scoring the winner 23 minutes from time when Brown's composed
finish found the bottom corner. It took us on to 11 points after the
opening six league games of the season and tied us top with Arsenal.

With the weekend having a West Ham focus, the young Blues headed east 24
hours prior to the first team's trip to the London Stadium and that meant
four changes from our most recent PL2 assignment as Marcin Bulka, Ethan
Ampadu, Lucas Piazon and Callum Hudson-Odoi all dropped out of the side.

Jamie Cumming replaced Bulka in goal, while Marc Guehi, Tariq Uwakwe and
Brown all came into the team as eighth hosted fourth in the country's
leading development league. Edwards continued with the 3-5-2 system
preferred and honed since pre-season and the manager selected Joseph
Colley and captain Josh Grant to continue alongside Guehi at the back.

George McEachran has been instrumental in a deep-lying, controlling
midfield role and the 18-year-old started again to keep his record of
playing every league minute so far this campaign, while Gilmour and Uwakwe
joined him in a three-man central midfield. Juan Castillo and Tariq
Lamptey operated at left wing-back and right wing-back respectively, while
Daishawn Redan partnered Brown up top.

The Hammers included England Under-20 international Reece Oxford in their
starting 11 along with the league's highest assist-maker Powell though it
was the visitors, wearing yellow, who started brightest in rain-drenched
Dagenham. Lamptey provided an early warning sign, stealing possession from
Powell on halfway and bursting forward in typically dangerous fashion
before delivering for Brown to turn narrowly wide.

However, the home side's resistance lasted just seven minutes as we broke
the deadlock from the penalty spot. A neat move was initiated by
McEachran, who clipped an inviting pass out to Castillo on the left flank,
with the Dutchman in turn delivering first time and low into the centre.

As Brown prepared to take aim, Oxford came sliding in from behind and took
away the legs of the striker. Gilmour stepped up and converted with
confidence for his second goal of the season.

The Blues were bidding to build on three wins from three away from home
this term but their lead lasted just five minutes as West Ham levelled
through a penalty of their own. The right-sided combination of full-back
Ben Johnson and winger Diangana linked well, with the latter taking on
Castillo down the outside and going down under a stretching challenge. The
referee took his time before deeming it a foul and Powell picked up the
task of following Gilmour's lead and finding the net from 12 yards.

Steve Potts's side came into the weekend boasting the second-best attack
in the league but also with the second-worst defence, which may have
proved a significant factor in such an open contest between the two London
sides. Cumming was busy in the Chelsea goal, saving from Sean Adarkwa
moments after the equaliser before pushing away Diangana's fierce striker
after Uwakwe had conceded possession with a loose pass in midfield.

The hosts had momentum and went close again after 20 minutes as Bernardo
Rosa moved easily into space on the edge of the box and fired a deflected
shot just beyond the far post. Our youngsters managed to stem the flow
midway through the first period and started to pose an attacking threat of
their own once again.

Much of their joy came from wide areas and Redan soon turned provider from
the right, though his low cross was inches in front of strike partner
Brown in the six-yard box. Trott then warmed his palms with a crucial
intervention to push away Castillo's delivery before Adarkwa spurned a
promising sight at goal down the other end.

Only Aji Alese's last-ditch block eight yards out prevented the Blues
scoring again before the break. A left-sided corner swung in by Gilmour
was kept alive by Grant at the back post and the loose ball fell kindly
for Colley but the Sweden Under-19 defender was thwarted by an excellent
defensive intervention.

The Blues were buoyed early in the second period as the Hammers were
reduced to 10 men six minutes after the restart. Akinola had been booked
early in the game for a blatant pull of Redan's shirt and the left-back
was caught committing a similar offence as the visitors tried to break
forward on the counter-attack. It was hardly subtle and resulted in the
hosts suffering with a numerical disadvantage for over half an hour.

Diangana had earlier tested Cumming with a curling left-footed effort that
lacked the accuracy to trouble our keeper, though the extra man on the
field soon started to reflect in the game's play. Oxford did well to
acrobatically clear a teasing corner but there was little to be done as
Edwards's side took the lead for the second time in the afternoon with a
quarter of the contest remaining.

Gilmour added an assist to his earlier penalty goal, threading a lovely
pass forward to find Brown accelerating down the inside-left channel. The
teenage striker had already banked a hard-working shift up top but he
showed great composure to open up his body and slot the ball beyond Trott
and in off the base of the far post.

Edwards soon made alterations to ensure his side's latest advantage was
preserved. Conor Gallagher replaced the goalscorer Brown, adding presence
in midfield, and the shape tweaked to a 3-4-3. The measures helped us
control the final 25 minutes, with the only complaint being that further
goals weren't added.

Uwakwe's left-footed shot forced Trott into a low save before the
goalkeeper denied Lamptey following a neat exchange with substitute
Martell Taylor-Crossdale down the right. In stoppage time, Uwakwe flashed
a drive across the face of goal but it mattered little to the final result
as the Blues took the points.
