PL2 report: Chelsea 2 Everton 2
Fri 21 Apr 2017
Our development squad shared the points with league leaders Everton
following an entertaining encounter at Aldershot.
A brace from striker Ike Ugbo helped the Blues to a positive result in
their final home outing of the campaign. Bassala Sambou had equalised in
the first half and Liam Walsh put the Toffees ahead but the visitors will
have to wait until the final match before they can celebrate any title
triumph.
There were two changes to the Chelsea line-up from the one a fortnight ago
in a 3-0 Stamford Bridge win over Sunderland. Cole Dasilva replaced Dujon
Sterling at right-back as the Blues retained their 4-2-3-1 shape, while
Jacob Maddox came into the side on the right of an attacking trio
supporting striker Ugbo.
The visitors from Merseyside included Bosnian international midfielder
Muhamed Besic in their starting team and they enjoyed a bright opening to
the contest. Beni Baningime's strike from distance clipped the top of
Mitchell Beeney's crossbar before Jonjoe Kenny, the advancing right-back,
fired a foot over the angle of bar and post.
The opener came after a quarter of an hour and was fashioned through a
devastating combination of pace and skill on the counter-attack. Chalobah
cleared the ball forward and Ugbo linked up well with Mount, the latter
advancing before producing a super pass to feed his forward. The number
nine did the rest, albeit with a little fortunate from a defensive
deflection that took his effort away from Mateusz Hewelt, the Toffees
keeper, and into the back of the net.
Everton needed three points to secure the PL2 title and their response was
befitting of a side looking to lift silverware this term. Beeney pushed a
shot from Sambou behind for a corner before gathering Besic's attempt at
goal but the momentum was firmly with David Unsworth's side as the
half-hour mark approached.
Sambou could have scored twice before eventually levelling with 27 minutes
on the clock. A strike on the spin was parried to safety before the
striker headed over from an inviting position eight yards out. Beeney
almost thwarted him for the goal, stopping the first shot after the
forward had sprung the offside trap but spilling the ball back for him to
prod in to an unguarded goal.
Kyle Scott flashed a shot just wide but the visitors were ahead seven
minutes into the second period. Walsh had spurned a headed opportunity
moments before but made no mistake with the second attempt, receiving a
cross from Kenny and beating Beeney with the aid of a big deflection.
The hosts responded with the introduction of Harvey St Clair and the
Scotland youth international went close to having an instant impact with a
rising drive that narrowly missed the upright. Yet the scores were level
again on the hour mark and Ugbo was the Chelsea hitman once again, his low
left-footed shot too precise and well-struck to give Hewelt a chance. It
marked a fifth goal in three games for the striker and a 23rd of a
productive campaign.
It was proving to be a tale of two strikers, Ugbo taking his chances when
they presented themselves while Beeney continued to frustrate Sambou down
the other end. The Everton number nine should have scored with a header
that was directed too kindly for the goalkeeper to palm away before he
failed to get on the end of a cross flashed across goal.
The twisting and turning Mount carved out an inviting chance for Ugbo with
a delivery from the left but the 18-year-old wasn't anticipating the cross
and could only watch the ball zip agonisingly across the penalty area.
Maddox spurned a promising sight at goal after Mount had set him clear
before Beeney produced one last super save in added time, instinctively
reacting to push away Kenny's header from a set-piece.
Academy action continues tomorrow morning as our youth team host Blackburn
Rovers in the Under-18 Premier League merit round. Kick-off at Cobham is
11.05am and the game is live on Chelsea TV.
