Under-21 report: Everton 0 Chelsea 2
Sun, 14 Sep 2014
Our Under-21 side recorded their third win of the campaign to maintain
their 100 per cent start as they defeated Everton at the Finch Farm
training complex on Sunday afternoon. Jeremie Boga (pictured above) bagged
a brace in the first half to do the damage while, at the back, there was a
first clean sheet of the season to celebrate for the defence.
== Team news ==
Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that beat Norwich City before
the international break, with Jordan Houghton, Alex Davey, Isaiah Brown
and Todd Kane all returning to the starting team. Kane and Davey were
joined by Ola Aina and Fankaty Dabo at the back, protecting Mitchell
Beeney in goal.
Houghton was partnered by Ruben Loftus-Cheek at the base of midfield,
while Charly Musonda, Boga and Brown supported Dominic Solanke in attack.
The hosts featured first-team experience within their ranks as Bryan
Oviedo and Arouna Kone bolstered their starting 11, alongside England
youth internationals Ryan Ledson, Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning.
== First half ==
An even opening period saw both sides with spells of possession without
fashioning clear opportunities, though Jindrich Stanek in the Everton goal
was alert to back-pedal and tip over Musonda's dangerous inswinging corner
after 10 minutes. Brown then headed the Belgian's delivery from the
opposite flank narrowly wide.
Chelsea's wait for the first goal didn't last much longer with Boga firing
the visitors into the lead after a quarter of an hour. Brown made progress
down the left flank, escaping the attention of a couple of defenders
before finding Boga on the edge of the box with a square pass. The young
Frenchman did the rest with aplomb, arrowing a brilliant strike into the
top corner that left Stanek grasping at thin air.
David Unsworth's side responded strongly and were focusing the bulk of
their attacking intent down the wings, using the pace of Galloway in
particular to trouble Chelsea. Oviedo's deflected shot was comfortable for
Beeney, before a series of Everton efforts at goal were met with the
dogged resistance.
The hosts put together their best move of the game as the interval
approached and ought to have levelled as Joe Williams and Kone exchanged a
neat one-two in the box to fashion an opening but the striker spurned the
chance as he fired wide. As Chelsea responsed, Matthew Pennington threw
his head in the way of a Musonda strike and Loftus-Cheek's header from the
following corner was cleared off the line by Oviedo before a strong finish
to the half was rewarded with another goal.
Boga once again conjured time and space for himself 25 yards out and
drilled a brilliant low effort into the bottom far corner that once again
left Stanek helpless.
== Second half ==
The second period began with high intensity and pressing from both sides
and, as a result, chances were limited as the defences held out strong.
The young Toffees' skipper Ryan Ledson had a great chance to reduce his
side's deficit after 55 minutes after a well-worked Everton move, but he
steered his shot wide from a tight angle.
Chelsea substitute Ike Ugbo, still a schoolboy and making his Under-21
debut, worked hard and provided a new threat for Viveash's side in attack,
though Loftus-Cheek had to spring highest at the other end to head clear
as a dangerous inswinging corner was aided by the wind.
Sam Byrne tested Beeney with a low effort as the game moved into the final
10 minutes before Davey was called into action to preserve the clean
sheet. An incident involving Beeney saw the goalkeeper stumble when in
possession and hand the ball to the hosts, though the Scottish youth
international defender was alive to the danger and reacted quickly to
divert the ball behind.
That proved to be the game's final incident of note as Chelsea held on for
a third win from their opening three league matches.
Next up for Viveash's group is the start of the UEFA Youth League on
Wednesday 17 September as Schalke, the side that knocked our Under-19s out
of the competition at the quarter-final stage last term, visit Cobham.
== Manager reaction ==
Three away points was obviously pleasing for Viveash as his side played
their first action on the road of the season, though a clean sheet was
equally satisfying for the manager and his staff. Speaking to the official
Chelsea website after the victory on Merseyside, he explained: 'We've said
before about the importance of clean sheets because we feel we've always
got a threat to score goals so to get one here in our first away game of
the season is really pleasing.
'We were exceptional in the first half and then in the second half we had
to dig in and fight for that clean sheet because the game became very
disjointed. We knew it was going to be windy when they switched the game
to the training ground because we played here last season with the youth
team and we had some real problems with it. Our game plan was to go
forward a little bit quicker than we usually do in the first 20 minutes,
get balls into Brown and Solanke and then try to create space and I
thought we executed it excellently.'
The manager also had praise for goalscorer Boga, though it was his work
off the ball that most impressed Viveash. There was also a debut for
schoolboy Ugbo and the striker equipped himself extremely well in the eyes
of his boss.
'Jeremie's goals were two world-class strikes but his work off the ball
and his screening was the best I've seen from him in the first half and
I'm delighted with that. It was great to get Houghton and Davey their
first starts of the season, and get Toddy Kane through another 90 minutes
and Brown through an hour.
'We're working across two games with Schalke in the Youth League next week
but to come on as a 15-year-old and play in the Under-21s is a fantastic
achievement for Ike. I saw a lot of him last year and he scored for me in
the youth team as an Under-15 so I have a lot of confidence in him. I've
shown before that I'm not afraid to play young players in big games.'
