Under-21s report: Chelsea 3 Sunderland 0
Sun, 14 Dec 2014
Our Under-21s went top of the Under-21 Premier League with victory at
Cobham this afternoon (Sunday).
An even first half ended goalless before the hosts struck twice in the
first 10 minutes after the restart. Ruben Loftus-Cheek netted from close
range and Charly Musonda found the back of the net from the edge of the
box before John Swift added a third late on with a brilliant individual
effort.
== Team news ==
It had been five weeks since Adi Viveash's side were last in league
action, a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, and there
were three changes from the side that started that game. The back five
remained unchanged, with Mitchell Beeney in goal and Fankaty Dabo, Ola
Aina, Andreas Christensen and Jay Dasilva comprising the defence.
Recent first-team debutant Ruben Loftus-Cheek joined captain Jordan
Houghton and Jeremie Boga in midfield, while Dominic Solanke led the line
up front supported by Charly Musonda and John Swift, the latter having
recently returned from a loan spell at Rotherham.
== First half ==
It was an even opening at a cold Cobham as the Under-21s started their
final league game of the calendar year against a side with just one point
fewer than them in the Under-21 Premier League. The visitors ceded
possession to their hosts early on but Viveash's side were unable to break
through a resilient and well-organised defence too often.
Boga's arrowing shot appeared to be heading for the top corner before
thumping Solanke on the back of the head and flying away, while Lynden
Gooch went close for the Black Cats and then Thomas Beadling fired over
from the resultant corner.
Loftus-Cheek headed over from a Blues corner before Solanke led the shouts
for a penalty after he went down as he advanced on goal, having been
released brilliantly by Boga, however the referee waved the appeals away.
The best move of the half was orchestrated down the Chelsea left as
Musonda fed an overlapping Dasilva and the full-back delivered a low cross
for Solanke. The striker seemed set to turn it in from close range but was
thwarted by a brilliant challenge from defender Scott Harrison.
== Second half ==
It didn't take long for the young Blues to put their manager's half-time
words into practice as they broke the deadlock within a minute of the
restart. Swift escaped down the right and advanced towards goal from the
byline before cutting the ball back to a supporting Loftus-Cheek. The
18-year-old had worked himself some space in the box and made no mistake
with his finish, sweeping it confidently beyond goalkeeper Maksymilian
Stryjek.
Christensen headed narrowly wide after 50 minutes before the hosts doubled
their advantage moments later. Houghton won the ball back in midfield with
a couple of strong tackles and advanced into the Sunderland half before
supplying Musonda. The young Belgian, cutting infield from the left, did
well to beat a defender and give himself a sight at goal, which he
capitalised on with a great strike that flew into the bottom corner to
give him his second league goal of the season.
The home side remained largely in control of proceedings following those
two quick goals early in the half, however chances remained at a premium
as both sides continued to fight to take charge in midfield. Substitute
Izzy Brown went close to grabbing a third goal but was thwarted by an
excellent clearance from the goal line by Thomas McNamee, with Stryjek
beaten.
At the other end, the young Black Cats were having more of an influence as
they took chances to get back into the game in the final 15 minutes,
although our defence was standing firm in the face of the new threat, with
Beeney marshalling those in front of him well.
The game's third goal did arrive in the final minutes of the game but it
was a strike that settled the contest rather than reigniting it. Swift
provided it with a moment of individual brilliance, darting inside from
the right flank and beating three defenders before firing a powerful
strike beyond Stryjek from 20 yards out.
== Manager reaction ==
Adi Viveash admitted his side were challenged against an impressive
Sunderland but praised his players for executing the tactical plan
perfectly. Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, he
said: 'We're really pleased with the way we've played today against a very
good Sunderland team.
'They're one of the most impressive Under-21 teams I've seen this year and
it was quite a challenge for us to come up with a game plan coming into
the game but tactically we were spot-on and did it really well. We started
the second half really sharply, which we spoke about at half-time, and all
three goals were excellent.
'John Swift makes one and scores one and it's great for Ruben to score;
we've had a bit of banter with him about how he always seems to score for
England but it's important for him to add goals to his game with us. I
thought Andreas and Ola were outstanding against a very good number nine
and for us to go through the first half of the year having only lost once
and with the best defensive record in the league is a good achievement.
'It's been a fantastic weekend for the Academy; the Under-12s have won the
Christmas Truce tournament in Europe, the youth team had a great win at
West Ham yesterday and the Under-16s won 6-0 for the second week in a row
so we're pleased to continue that with a win today.'
The Under-21s are next in action on Friday 19 December as they host
Borussia Monchengladbach at Staines in their Premier League International
Tournament opener.
