UEFA Youth League report: Schalke 2 Chelsea 0
Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Our Under-19 side suffered their first defeat in the UEFA Youth League
this season as two second-half Schalke goals ended our 100% record in the
competition.
Maurice Multhaup was the scorer on both occasions, first finishing coolly
after being played in behind then curling home a free-kick from 20 yards.
In between those goals Dominic Solanke and Tammy Abraham came very close
to equalising in the same move but the Blues could not find a way past a
resolute Schalke defence.
The defeat means we will have to match Schalke's result on the final
matchday to ensure we finish as group winners. Chelsea host Sporting
Lisbon while Schalke travel to Maribor.
== Team news ==
Adi Viveash made three changes from the side that had won so convincingly
in Maribor last time out in this competition. In goal, Bradley Collins
came in for Jared Thompson while midfielders Kyle Scott and Alex Kiwomya
also started, with Jake Clarke-Salter and Charley Musonda making way.
4-2-3-1 was the preferred formation, with Izzy Brown leading the line and
Dominic Solanke in the number 10 role.
== First half ==
A bumpy pitch didn't help Collins's cause early on but after initially
miskicking a backpass he dealt admirably with the awkward looping ball.
The goalkeeper's busy start to the game continued when he made three very
good saves in quick succession, first denying Multhaup and then, with his
feet, thwarting Schalke's striking pair of Felix Platte and Hendrik
Lohmar. In the midst of those good opportunities, Multhaup also struck the
bar from range.
The Blues had been fortunate not to go behind in an occasionally fraught
opening 10 minutes, but with their first real attack of the match our
youngsters almost snatched the lead. Brown worked space down the right and
crossed dangerously across the face of the six-yard box. Scott controlled
and laid it back to Loftus-Cheek whose first-time shot slid inches beyond
the far post.
By the midway point of the half Chelsea had firmly established themselves
in the match, belying the difficult playing surface by maintaining
possession impressively; it was a sure sign confidence was growing, even
if clear openings were proving hard to come by.
One rapid break involving Colkett and Brown ended with Kiwomya, from a
tight angle on the right, forcing Schalke's keeper Janik Schilder into an
uncomfortable save at his near post.
At the other end Sven Kohler volleyed wide after exchanging passes with
Platte, who himself wasn't far away with a daisy-cutter. There was nothing
to separate the two sides going into the interval, however, after a
closely-contested first 45 minutes.
== Second half ==
Jake Clarke-Salter replaced Fikayo Tomoro at half-time. Ola Aina shifted
across to right-back to accommodate the sub at centre-half. Within a
minute of the restart Kiwomya flashed a cross into a dangerous area but
unfortunately it was beyond the reach of the stretching Solanke.
On 56 minutes Multhaup found space behind the Chelsea backline but he took
his shot very early and Collins had no problem gathering it. A second
Chelsea change saw Tammy Abraham introduced for Kiwomya and the shape
shifted to 4-3-3, but within three minutes the Blues were behind.
A clever diagonal ball over Christensen again found the ever-dangerous
Multhaup bearing down on the Chelsea goal and this time he slipped the
ball through Collins's legs and into the net.
When Scott found Solanke racing clear we looked set for an instant
response but the forward's strike was saved by Schilder; the ball
rebounded to Solanke who acrobatically volleyed towards goal and this time
it was stopped on the goal-line by a covering defender, then agonisingly
cleared before Abraham could force it in.
We were made to pay for not converting that chance when Multhaup curled in
an excellent free-kick from the edge of the box in the 76th minute, giving
Collins no chance. The game's outstanding player had his second.
Another Schalke goal would have given them the advantage in the
head-to-head record between the two sides – leaving our destiny in their
hands – but we saw out the rest of the game ensuring if we beat Sporting
on December 10 we will qualify as group winners.
