UYL report: Molde 0 Chelsea 4 (1-14 on agg)

24 Oct 2018

Chelsea Under-19s eased into the next round of the UEFA Youth League after
completing a comprehensive two-legged victory over the Norwegians Molde.

The young Blues were blistering in the first leg three weeks previously,
7-0 up at half-time and 10-1 winners at the midway point in the tie, a
seemingly unassailable advantage secured. It was more even in difficult
conditions in Norway, with Tino Anjorin's fine finish in the first half
the only score until the final 10 minutes when Charlie Brown added to the
tally with a 10-minute hat-trick.

It ensured the visitors were safely through to the second knockout round,
where they will take on IF Elfsborg. The winners of that tie, the first
leg of which will be played in Sweden in the first week of November, will
advance to host a group stage runner-up from the UEFA Champions League
pathway.

Four of the starters from our big win at Cobham earlier in the month
returned to the line-up for the trip to Norway as Edwards utilised the
opportunity to rest and rotate. Joseph Colley continued as captain, while
Conor Gallagher, Ian Maatsen and Brown all kept their places in the team.
Brown led the line up front alongside Thierno Ballo, while Jack Wakely and
Marcel Lavinier joined Colley in defence.

Karlo Ziger made his first Under-19s appearance in goal, one of two UEFA
Youth League debutants for the visitors along with schoolboy wing-back
Tino Livramento, who started on the right opposite left-sided wideman
Maatsen. Tariq Uwakwe and Anjorin comprised the midfield trio with
Gallagher.

Molde made three changes from their trip to London and hosted the Blues at
their impressive Aker Stadion, situated on the west coast of the country
and fully exposed to the climes of the Norwegian Sea. The setting among
the Scandinavian fjords was picturesque but cold, only a couple of degrees
at kick-off. It was 21 years and a day since our famous visit to Tromso in
European competition, though there was no snow on this occasion and the
artificial pitch was never in danger of freezing.

Edwards's side had been ice-cold with their finishing in the first leg,
recording a 10-1 advantage that was surely in little danger of being
overturned. Nevertheless, this was a chance for a changed team to impress
and they created their first chance inside two minutes as Anjorin found
Brown, though the striker was unable to direct his clipped finish on
target to trouble Hermann Raestad, the Molde goalkeeper.

Anjorin remained at the heart of our most incisive attacking play in the
opening exchanges, forcing Raestad into a flying save with a curling
effort after Ballo had stolen possession before cutting inside from the
left and shooting low but tamely.

Despite the heavy scoreline in the first leg, Molde had given a much
better account of themselves in the final 25 minutes and they were eager
to produce a similar performance on home soil. Christian Dahl, not
involved at Cobham, posed their threat and showed neat footwork as he
jinked into the box after 20 minutes. His advance was halted as he ran
into Colley and the Belgian officials were unmoved by the speculative
penalty appeals.

The midfielder then fashioned a sight at goal for himself from just inside
the 18-yard box and surely would have tested Ziger had it not been for an
impressive block by Lavinier, the defender throwing himself bravely in the
way of a well-hit strike.

Anjorin's bright start was marked with the breakthrough goal just after
the half-hour mark, though it was an opener that owed as much to loose
play at the back as it did a typically composed finish from the
16-year-old. After netting in each of his last three appearances for Andy
Myers's youth team, the England Under-18 international pounced on a loose
pass and slotted the ball across goal into the bottom corner.

A lead on the night brought renewed tempo and zip to the play of last
season's competition runners-up. Anjorin was inches away from doubling the
tally, firing just over the crossbar with a sweet strike, though Colley
had to defend well down the other end to thwart Tobias Hestad.

The second period started with a flurry of half-chances as Gallagher fired
a promising free-kick straight into the wall before Sivert Gussias spurned
Molde's best opportunity of the evening as he dragged his shot beyond the
far post after advancing down the right channel.

Edwards and his side were left bitterly disappointed at how their UEFA
Youth League journey ended last term, a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the
final compounded by an underwhelming display. There is clearly an appetite
to return to Nyon and right those wrongs, with a new crop of youngsters
just as hungry to make their mark.

Ballo almost escaped free and into a goalscoring position with the hour
mark approaching, though a last-ditch but perfectly timed sliding
challenge from the home side's skipper Thor Olav Moe took the ball away
from the Austrian's path. Hestad then threatened Ziger's goal once again
but a wayward shot landed harmlessly in the empty stand.

The final third of the contest was played in a steady drizzle of icy rain
and Edwards took advantage of the competition rules to use his full
complement of substitutions, with Clinton Mola, Marcel Lewis and Dynel
Simeu and George Nunn on for their first taste of European football.

Russell fired wide from 25 yards before Edwards's boys provided a final
flurry of attacking prowess to add further goals. Brown took his tally in
the tie to five goals with a treble in the final 10 minutes, initially
latching on to Maatsen's forward pass and lofting the ball deliciously
over the head of Raestad and into the net. His second and third were more
cultured finishes, both drilled with power and precision from outside the
box into the bottom corner, as he claimed the match ball. That proved the
final blow inflicted by the Blues, who will next take on Elfsborg in a
double-header next month.

UYL reaction: Neat in Norway

25 Oct 2018

Our Under-19s dealt well with difficult conditions, a plastic pitch and
near-zero October temperatures last night in Norway to add four goals to
their 10-1 first-leg victory and ease past Molde in the UEFA Youth League.

Tino Anjorin opened the scoring after half an hour but it took until the
final 10 minutes before the visitors were able to ensure the scoreboard
reflected their dominant display as Charlie Brown bagged a hat-trick.
After the game, the striker assessed a solid performance from a young team
who had seven changes from the Cobham fixture three weeks previously.

'I'm obviously happy with my three goals but the main thing was coming out
here and performing well as a team,' claimed Brown, whose five goals
across the tie take him top of the early competition scoring standings.

'A few of the younger players got a chance to prove themselves and I
thought they did really well because Molde sat off and defended their box
well, especially in the first half when it was quite hard to break down.
Most of our goals came towards the end in the final 10 minutes when they
were fatigued and we made the most of the spaces that appeared.'

Manager Joe Edwards explained the thinking behind his altered team
selection, with rest and rotation preferred prior to a hectic run of games
in three different competitions. The development squad return to league
action on Saturday against Brighton before travelling to Plymouth for a
must-win group game in the Checkatrade Trophy next Tuesday.

'After such a big win at home and with a busy fixture schedule ahead of
us, we decided to make quite a lot of changes to the squad,' Edwards
outlined. 'It was a good opportunity for the younger players. They all saw
the first leg and how dominant we were so the challenge for them was to
recreate the good work we did three weeks ago but also not have
expectations that were beyond our reach.

'In the first leg, we made some changes later in the game and got a bit
sloppy, which led to us conceding and I know the younger boys were
disappointed with that. It was nice to see tonight that we had almost the
opposite effect and all the boys who came on looked bright, enthusiastic
and showed good quality.

'We just wanted to do the basics right like we did in the first leg –
move the ball quickly, make those sharp movements to make angles – and I
thought we did that well.'

'Molde clearly tightened up a lot from the first game. They were probably
disappointed with the amount of goals they conceded quite easily so they
were difficult to break down. The first half was a very professional
performance from us without too much cutting-edge and we didn't create
enough for how much decent football we played. Having said that, the
amount we moved the ball certainly took its toll in the last 20 minutes of
the game and we did become clinical.'

The young Blues will be back in Scandinavia at the start of next month for
their next European assignment, the first of a double-header against the
Swedish side IF Elfsborg. The winners of that tie will advance to host a
group stage runner-up from the UEFA Champions League pathway and Brown
admits avenging last term's defeat in the final is firmly on the minds of
all involved.

'We don't know much about Elfsborg yet but we do know how good we are,' he
added. 'We're massively motivated in the UEFA Youth League this season and
we've set a goal for ourselves to try our best to win it. Everyone is
fully focused on that and this result is just one step along the way.'
