UEFA Youth League report: Dynamo Kiev 0 Chelsea 2
Tue 20 Oct 2015
A goal in each half from Tammy Abraham moved Chelsea clear of their
Ukrainian opponents at the top of UEFA Youth League Group G after this
one-sided encounter at the Lobanovskiy Stadium.
The striker celebrated signing his first professional contract last week
with two clinical finishes as Adi Viveash's Under-19s returned to winning
ways after drawing in Porto last time out. At the halfway point of the
group stage they are first with seven points, three clear of their hosts
today.
The Blues dominated throughout in heavy Kiev rain and could easily have
scored more, but in the end two goals were more than enough against a side
that struggled to create chances. Much of that was down to sterling
defensive work from those in blue.
There were five changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Porto in this
competition three weeks ago. Bradley Collins started in goal with Trevoh
Chalobah coming in at left-back. Charlie Colkett began his first match of
the season at this level, captaining the side, with Jacob Maddox and Isaac
Christie-Davies deployed behind frontman Abraham.
Once the game had settled on a very wet afternoon in the Ukrainian capital
it was the all-blue visitors that created the first chance, but Maddox saw
two quickfire close-range shots saved. Soon after Abraham blasted high and
wide after a loose ball fell to him in the box.
But the striker made no mistake on 13 minutes. Much of the credit must go
to Maddox for an enterprising run down the right and a cool cut-back when
he reached the byline. There was Abraham, six yards out, to fire high into
the net.
Those two linked up again on the half-hour when Maddox slipped his
team-mate in, but Vadym Soldatenko was out quickly to block the shot. Kyle
Scott picking up the pieces scuffed his effort wide.
The conditions were making it difficult for both teams to retain
possession, particularly when put under pressure in the final third, but
it was consistently Chelsea offering more of a threat. When Dynamo built a
rare attack, our defence was strong and organised quelling any danger. The
hosts didn't muster a single first-half shot.
It was once more Abraham and Maddox who were heavily involved in our first
opening after the break. The tall striker bound forward and crossed
dangerously; a Dynamo defender intercepted but only diverted the ball as
far as Maddox, who with a good sight of goal hit across the shot too much.
It drifted harmlessly behind.
Abraham and Scott nearly fashioned openings with some nice individual
skill before Colkett went into the book for a late challenge. Abraham then
had a good shout for a penalty after having his shirt pulled, and down the
other end Collins was called into action for the first time, comfortably
saving a Tychuk header.
On the hour Abraham again got on the end of a ball in the channels and
burst into the box, with Soldatenko out quickly to block his chipped
effort from the tightest of angles. The game was more open now and Dynamo
passed up an excellent opportunity to equalise, collectively deliberating
for too long in the box. By the time Olexiy Schcebetun got a shot away,
Aina slid across to block.
Maddox tried his luck after a weaving run, forcing a scrambling save,
before Abraham doubled his and his team's tally on 72 minutes. Some neat
interplay on the edge of the Dynamo box culminated in Scott finding
Christie-Davies. He rolled the ball in the direction of Abraham, whose
first-time finish was crisp and clinical, clipped over the onrushing
Soldatenko.
He almost had his third 10 minutes later but an outstretched Dynamo leg
deflected his goalbound shot over, the ball having fallen to him from a
saved Colkett effort.
Save for a free-kick curled over Collins's bar there were no late scares.
In fact, the Blues finished the game in complete control, the recurring
theme of the afternoon.
== Manager reaction ==
Under-19s manager Adi Viveash was pleased with what he described as a very
good all-round team performance.
'On the back of Porto and what happened there, we knew this was a really
pivotal game,' he told the official Chelsea website.
'We had a young side out today and I was really pleased with the work
ethic. In the first half we controlled the game and we should have gone in
more than one up. The 10 minutes after half-time were Kiev's best part of
the game, they came out very strongly but we defended well and then we
regained our composure. We could have scored a few on the counter-attack.
'The second goal was a good team goal - great play by Kyle, a wonderful
pass by Isaac and a brilliant finish by Tammy who led the line really well
as a target man. Kyle was our best player, as he was in Porto, so this
competition is certainly getting the best out of him.'
Porto beat Maccabi Tel Aviv at home by the same score today but next up
for Chelsea Under-19s is a reverse fixture against Dynamo on 4 November.
'Now we can look forward to the game at Cobham and if we can get a
positive result in that we will almost be qualified,' noted Viveash.
