Under-18s Premier League Cup final report: Fulham 1 Chelsea 2

04 May 2022

It was the blue half of West London who lifted the U18 Premier League Cup
this evening as our young Blues defeated Fulham at Craven Cottage. It was
our first win over our rivals this season.

It was a thrilling affair as both sides had opportunities to increase
their goal tallies. We took the lead early on through Leo Castledine as a
fast move caught our opponents by surprise and Castledine took advantage
curling beyond the Fulham keeper.

The home side settled and responded through Luke Harris; Oliver Sanderson
had contested a ball in the air with Ted Curd, the referee deemed it to be
fair and the ball fell to Harris who levelled the score.

Both teams had chances to take the lead with Sanderson hitting the
crossbar for Fulham and Jimi Tauriainen hitting the post for Ed Brand's
team.

With the game on a knife-edge, we grabbed what turned out to be the winner
as Charlie Webster played in Jude Soonsup-Bell and he finished expertly
beyond the keeper.

== Team news ==

Ed Brand had a strong squad of players to select from and his intentions
were made clear with Williams, Webster, Vale, Hall and Soonsup-Bell being
drafted into the starting line-up. It was no surprise to see Alfie
Gilchrist named as captain too seeing as he was the man with the armband
in our FA Youth Cup campaign.

== Blue strikes first ==

Fulham kicked the game off, but the match settled into an early pattern
with our young Blues keeping control of the ball. Soonsup-Bell had an
early half chance with the keeper just beating him to the ball when played
through on goal by Gilchrist.

It did not take long however for the final's first goal, and it came
through Leo Castledine who after being found by Hall fabulously curled the
ball beyond Michael Allen in the Fulham net.

== Fulham resurgence ==

A short corner was played to Harvey Araujo who delivered the perfect cross
for striker Oliver Sanderson, but he could only put his unmarked header
wide.

Sanderson had another opportunity to threaten, and his deflected strike
trickled dangerously towards the Ted Curd's far post, but the ball went
wide.

It had been a while since our last chance, but the next one was presented
to us after a misplaced pass between Fulham defenders. Hall was again the
provider as he slotted in Castledine, but his attempted first-time finish
was tame and was safely collected by the keeper.

The home side did get the goal that their play deserved although in
questionable circumstances as a floated cross was contested between Curd
and Sanderson with the latter bundling over our keeper, with the referee
not giving a foul. Luke Harris reacted first and volleyed in to draw the
game level.

== Jabs from both sides ==

As the first period was drawing to a close, lovely work between Jimi
Taurainen and Soonsup-Bell released the Finnish midfielder, but his
side-footed shot was saved well.

Good keeping from Curd who is only 16 years old, prevented Imani
Lanquerdoc from pouncing on a loose ball in the box.

After a long stoppage in play due to a treatment being needed to a pair of
the home side's players, Webster had a free-kick opportunity to give us
the lead and he came agonisingly close as the ball flew past the keeper's
right-hand post.

== Withstanding the pressure ==

A scramble in the box early in the second almost fell to Castledine but
the keeper was on hand to collect from the melee.

We needed to soak up long spells of pressure from the young Cottagers as
they started the second half on the front foot. Excellent defending from
Gilchrist prevented Sanderson from a tap-in.

Tauriainen won us a free-kick on the edge of the box after going on a mazy
run. He stepped up to take the set-piece and he brought out a stop from
Allen.

The home side should have taken the lead on the hour mark as they worked
their way into the box and after a reverse pass from Harris, Sanderson's
shot hit the crossbar. A huge let-off for our young Blues.

== Taking back control ==

We had a huge opportunity to take the lead as we beat the west London
side's press effectively and Webster played a piercing through ball to
Castledine. After already scoring today, he looked like he was going to
get his second as he beat Araujo with a step-over, however his eventual
shot went straight at the keeper.

With 15 minutes left on the clock the game was nicely poised for a
winner. Tauriainen almost gave us the lead as it was our turn to hit the
upright. A low effort from distance which Allen did well to tip onto the
foot of the post. We followed that up with a Webster shot on the edge of
the box which was heading in but for a flick off the head of a Fulham
defender.

The breakthrough finally came after our long spell dominating the ball and
the chances as 10 minutes from time Webster burst through the middle of
the pitch and fed Soonsup-Bell. The young striker who has already scored
twice against this outfit this season composed himself and finished with a
fine left-footed shot.

Our young Blues did well to see the game out controlling the ball and
making timely clearances. This is our second victory in this competition
as we last won it in its inaugural year in the 2017/18 season.

As well as being the U18 Premier League Cup champions, Malik Mothersille
finished as the competition's highest goalscorer making it a double
delight for the Academy.

These nights are always special. It's been four years since CFCU18 won a
trophy and, Youth Cup or not, it's an enriching experience for everyone
involved, one that stokes the fires of ambition and desire to take steps
forward. Congratulations to everyone at the academy.

Under-18 Premier League Cup reaction: Ed Brand on the fantastic winning
feeling

05 May 22

Our young Blues are once again winners of the Under-18 Premier League Cup
following a win at Fulham last night and after falling just short in the
league hunt and the FA Youth Cup, head coach Ed Brand shared his thoughts
on the win and the effort from his players...

https://i.imgur.com/YbYIkHS.jpg

After being appointed youth team boss in the summer of 2019, this is a
long-awaited piece of silverware for Brand. However, having been the
assistant coach under Jody Morris during his time in the Academy, the
former Youth Cup captain is no stranger to success at this club.

'Winning is always a fantastic feeling,' he said shortly after the final
whistle. 'We speak about development and we always talk about individuals
and who can perform in environments like this, so it's nice to do both at
the same time.’

This echoes the words of our head of youth development Neil Bath who in
the lead up to this game had said that 'winning is not everything, but it
is definitely a part of development.'

The match-winner Jude Soonsup-Bell had already scored a brace against our
west London neighbours Fulham earlier this season and he was on hand to be
the thorn in the young Cottagers' side once again.

'Jude is a top goalscorer,' continued Brand. 'He showed great composure to
get the ball out of his feet and finish well when he got his chance. He is
a fantastic player at this level and he should be really proud.

Jude Soonsup-Bell took his goal brilliantly as his goal turned out to be
the match winner

'I do want to give a special mention to Charlie Webster as well and his
involvement in the match-winning moment as some great individual
brilliance in the middle of the park is what allowed Jude the opportunity
to get the winner.'

There have been a number of learning aspects for this group of players
throughout the course of the 2021/22 competition and above all is their
knack for being able to overcome challenges mid-game.

With comebacks against Reading, Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and
Derby County, our young Blues have handled temporary setbacks in a mature
fashion and this has helped them to remain undefeated throughout the whole
cup run.

'One thing about this campaign that I can say we have learnt as a team is
that we must expect anything,' added Brand.

'A lot has happened this year at Chelsea that has been out of our control
but I am thoroughly delighted as a coach that we have shown character and
tremendous bravery to continue showing their capabilities on the pitch.
They have never let things affect them and it is a testament to this
group.'

Our Under-18s close out their season this weekend as they face Southampton
in their final league encounter.
