Under-18s report: Chelsea 5 Norwich 1
29 Sep 2018
Our youngsters began the defence of the Under-18 Premier League Cup in
winning fashion at Cobham this lunchtime (Saturday), recording an emphatic
victory in their opening group game.

The Blues were drawn in Group F alongside the Canaries, Manchester United
and Newcastle, with the final two fixtures played away, so a winning
beginning was important if progress to the knockout round was to be
achieved.
Thierno Ballo took on responsibility to make that happen, starting as the
central striker and bagging a hat-trick inside 35 minutes to give Andy
Myers's side a perfect platform in the tie. Jake Askew's penalty save kept
the advantage intact before Henry Lawrence and Jon Russell found the back
of the net in the second half.
Norwich had earlier beaten Askew to spoil somewhat the defensive display
for the hosts, though a controlling performance ultimately earned a
comfortable win and a promising start to the group campaign.
There were five changes for our return to the domestic cup competition as
Jordan Aina, James Clark, Ballo, Lawrence and schoolboy Lewis Bate all
came into the team. It was three at the back once again as captain Jack
Wakely lined up alongside Pierre Ekwah Elimby and Marcel Lavinier, while
Clark and Aina operated in the wing-back positions.

James Clark skips away from a challenge
Bate, who doesn't turn 16 until next month, anchored in midfield, with
Russell and Lawrence offering support in the central midfield area. Ballo
led the line up front with Marcel Lewis just behind the Austrian. Askew
retained his place in goal.
This was the first trophy lifted in an unprecedented season of silverware
success last term for our youngsters and their defence of the title began
in excellent fashion. They broke the deadlock on a glorious autumnal
afternoon in Cobham with less than two minutes played as Ballo claimed his
third goal of the campaign.
The move started with Bate in midfield and saw Lewis shift the ball
invitingly for his forward partner Ballo, who stayed cool and rolled a
neat finish underneath Joe Rose, the onrushing Norwich goalkeeper.
The Canaries were beaten quarter-finalists in the inaugural version of the
competition last season and reached the last eight of the FA Youth Cup,
though their cup pedigree had not translated into league progress in
2018/19. David Wright's side arrived in Surrey with six defeats from their
opening six matches and their fragile confidence was hit further at going
behind so early.
However, their response was a positive one and they ought to have tested
Askew more severely after 15 minutes with a counter-attack down the left.
Anis Mehmeti carried the ball forward dangerously and played in Atli
Barkarson but the Icelandic winger sliced wide of the near post.

Henry Lawrence protects the ball
Myers's men had a foothold in the contest but their neat football was kept
at arm's length by the visitors until it was 2-0 after 18 minutes. The
second goal of the afternoon was essentially our first meaningful attack
since striking ahead and it resulted in Ballo doubling both his and the
team's tally. Lawrence's endeavour saw him reach the right byline and
though his first low cross was blocked, his follow-up was more accurate
and allowed Ballo to rifle a powerful finish high into the roof of the net
from six yards out.
Norwich's best spell came in a 10-minute period midway through the half as
they sustained a consistent goal threat for the first time. Isak
Thorvaldsson hit the post with a deflected effort that wrong-footed the
goalkeeper, before Mehmeti forced Askew into a flying save to push his
rasping drive over.
However, the ultimate punishment for profligacy came for the visitors 10
minutes before the break. An excellent, enterprising burst forward from
Lavinier down the right flank caused problems in the Norwich back-line and
the defender's low centre was fired beyond Rose by Ballo to complete a
first-half hat-trick.

Ballo scored a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to five
A topsy-turvy encounter continued as Norwich went straight down the other
end and won a penalty within 60 seconds of conceding. Thorvaldsson
accelerated away from Wakely and into the box before going down under the
skipper's sliding challenge. Mehmeti stepped up but was denied by Askew
diving down to his left to make the save.
The damage was almost compounded further as Ballo smacked the woodwork at
the end of another positive attack down the right, though it remained 3-0
by the time the referee's whistle signalled for the half-time break.
Norwich had enjoyed good moments in flashes but their attack lacked a
ruthless edge, in contrast to the hosts who were proving clinical in the
final third. We got a fourth goal four minutes after the restart and it
was a first of the season for Lawrence, who finished expertly inside the
box after Clark and Russell had fashioned a good move down the wing.

Lawrence and Russell embrace after both netting second-half goals
With a comfort in the contest established, Norwich managed to pull a goal
back after slack play out from the back by the Blues. Askew and Lavinier
exchanged passes but the defender's ball back lacked enough purchase and
Thorvaldsson pounced to slot into an unguarded net.
Chelsea controlled proceedings for much of the remainder of the action,
moving the ball around purposefully and with speed. The Canaries were
dealt a blow when their striker and scorer Thorvaldsson was forced to
withdraw after a clash of heads and they eventually fell further behind 11
minutes from time as Russell drilled a precise low effort into the bottom
corner.
There were opportunities for further goals in the latter stages as Rose
reached high to keep out Russell's curler and then Lavinier bundled the
ball just wide after a teasing ball delivered by Russell. Our youngsters
face a trip to Newcastle in mid-November before rounding off the group
stage at Manchester United in early December.

Under-18s reaction: Pleasing start to cup defence
01 Oct 2018
Our youngsters recorded their biggest win of the campaign to date as they
began the defence of their Under-18 Premier League Cup crown in emphatic
fashion against Norwich City.
https://i.imgur.com/ZCpPZiM.jpg
Thierno Ballo bagged a first-half hat-trick to fire Andy Myers's men into
a three-goal lead, though they were also indebted to goalkeeper Jake Askew
for a penalty save to keep the Canaries at bay before the break. Henry
Lawrence and Jon Russell also netted in the second period, though Askew
was denied a clean sheet after conceding moments after Lawrence had made
it 4-0.
After the game, manager Myers praised the performance of a team that had
five changes from their last league outing.
'It's very important for us to get off to a good start in the competition,
especially being the cup holders which means everyone has a point to prove
against us,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'We made some changes
in order to give people game time and from a development point of view it
was nice to see Jordan Aina, Pierre Ekwah Elimby and Lewis Bate, an
Under-16, come in and do well.
'The performance was good. We stuck to our game plan of putting them under
pressure and it was nice to see that pay off in terms of the goals we
scored on the high press.'
https://i.imgur.com/qJzQOS8.jpg
Austrian Ballo bagged a hat-trick against Norwich
The young Blues scored five for the first time since April's title
clincher against West Ham, though Myers urged his side to be even more
clinical in front of goal.
'It's always nice to score goals and win games but I thought there were
still more goals to be had,' he went on. 'We missed a few opportunities in
the first half and that's one thing we can focus on to improve. I want us
to be ruthless even when we're a couple of goals in front.
'I know five goals scored does sound ruthless but there were more chances
for us to score, just to get our confidence up in terms of hitting the
back of the net because it seems to be something missing a bit in our game
at the moment. We've had some good play in recent weeks but we're not
quite finishing chances in the final third so that's something for us to
keep working on.'
The cup competition begins with an initial three-game group stage before
the six winners plus two best runners-up advance to the quarter-finals. It
means there are fine margins to success and collecting points prior to
respective trips to the north-east and north-west was crucial. We travel
to Newcastle next before rounding off the group in Manchester at the start
of December.
'It's always important to get points on the board, especially with this
being our only home game in the group before we go to Newcastle and then
Manchester United.'
'Those are two games we're looking forward to because we don't get to play
the northern teams very often and it will hopefully be something a bit
different, not knowing what you're going to get when you turn up after a
long away trip. It's very pleasing to get off to such a good start and now
we're looking to keep building on that.'
The youth team return to league action next weekend with a trip to
Brighton. Before then, our Under-19s return to the UEFA Youth League this
midweek with a home leg against Norwegian side Molde. It takes place at
Cobham on Wednesday 3 October, kick-off 1pm.
