Under-18s report: Reading 2 Chelsea 0
Sat 30 Jan 2016
Chelsea Under-18s' lead at the top of the table was reduced to three
points with two games remaining after a 2-0 defeat away at second-placed
Reading.
The two teams were evenly matched in a tight game right from the start,
although Chelsea enjoyed the better of the possession in the opening
stages, the game mainly being played in Reading's half, with Jacob Maddox
and Mason Mount causing the home side's defence plenty of problems.
However, Reading started to come into the game a bit more around the
quarter-hour mark and opened the scoring with their first sight of goal,
centre-back Axel Andresson rising highest to head in a corner from the
left side on 17 minutes.
Chelsea tried to make an instant reply as Joseph Colley fired a low shot
narrowly wide after Ali Sunjic had knocked down Mount's high ball into the
penalty area, and Cole Dasilva tried his luck from range but couldn't keep
his shot down.
The visitors continued to create the better openings and it looked like
Mount would have the chance to equalise when he rounded Hoops goalkeeper
Luke Southwood after a smart interchange with Maddox, but the angle was
too tight to shoot and when he pulled the ball back for Dasilva, the
wing-back's effort was charged down by the Reading defenders.
Dujon Sterling was booked for committing one foul too many as the Chelsea
players pressed their opponents high up the pitch and pushed for a goal
before half-time.
It was Reading who would find the net before the break, though, again from
a corner, albeit this time with a big slice of fortune. As Conor Davis'
cross came in, Jared Thompson moved to his back post, only to see the
strong wind alter the flight of the ball significantly and cause it to go
straight in at the undefended front post.
There was one more chance before the break, as Ike Ugbo stretched to get a
toe on Sterling's low cross but couldn't quite make enough contact to get
the shot on target.
Reading came out for the second half looking to protect their lead,
leaving just one man in attack with the rest behind the ball. Despite
that, the first effort on target came from Chelsea, but Luke McCormick
couldn't keep his header away from the keeper.
Southwood nearly gave us a way back in when he dropped a cross from Mount,
but substitute Miro Muheim's effort went just over the bar. Ugbo also shot
narrowly wide at the near post after reacting quickest to a loose ball in
the box, but Reading threatened on the break, Colley having to make one
excellent tackle to deny the home side a shot when they had looked clean
through on goal.
The closest we came to equalising was through Ugbo, who met another Mount
cross into the box, only to see his header come back off the crossbar as
we entered the final 10 minutes. Harvey St Clair also came close, shooting
just over the bar from the edge of the area.
However, Reading managed to hold on for the three points, keeper Southwood
receiving a booking for time wasting in the process, setting up an
exciting finale to the Under-18 Premier League Southern Division.
-Meanwhile, the kick-off time for our next youth team game, the
penultimate encounter of the regional programme at home to Fulham next
Saturday 6 February, has been moved. The west London derby will now start
at the later time of 1pm, as opposed to the original 11am kick-off.
