Under-18s report: Norwich 1 Chelsea 2
Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Our Under-18s once again came from behind to secure victory in a tough
encounter at Norwich City this afternoon (Saturday).
Jamal Lewis had put the hosts in front after nine minutes following a
frantic opening spell in which the Blues struck the post twice, however
Tammy Abraham quickly levelled from the penalty spot having himself been
upended by goalkeeper Aston Oxborough.
Chelsea then pushed for a winning goal throughout the remainder of the
contest and sealed all three points late on. Abraham found himself in the
right place inside the six-yard box to benefit from a fortunate ricochet
and bagged his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.
== Team news ==
There were three changes by Under-18 manager Joe Edwards from the side
that came from behind to win 4-2 at Tottenham last weekend. Goalkeeper
Bradley Collins was injured in that win and was replaced by Under-16 Jared
Thompson, who made his Under-19 debut in Tuesday's 5-0 UEFA Youth League
win over Sporting Lisbon, while skipper Jake Clarke-Salter returned to the
back four alongside Jay Dasilva, Fikayo Tomori and schoolboy Josh Grant.
Ever-present Ruben Sammut continued in midfield next to Isaac
Christie-Davies and the advanced Kyle Scott, while Abraham, confident
after a hat-trick at Spurs, led the line up front supported by Miro Muheim
and Charlie Wakefield.
== First half ==
Edwards' side started strongly and the Canaries' post was rattled inside
20 seconds by Wakefield following Muheim's endeavours and delivery from
the right, with Aston Oxborough in goal comfortably beaten. Abraham then
poked just wide after a show of strength fashioned an opportunity for
himself, and Scott also thumped the base of the right post from a
free-kick in a frantic opening period.
However, the hosts were the side celebrating after nine minutes when they
scored with their first attack. A strong run from right-back Michee Efete
gained ground in the Chelsea half and he shifted the ball left to Jamal
Lewis, who remained composed as he finished well into the far bottom
corner.
Parity was restored within five minutes as the Blues responded positively.
Captain Clarke-Salter advanced down the left channel and charged down a
Norwich clearance, which ricocheted kindly for striker Abraham. He got his
body in between the ball and the goalkeeper, whose attempt to intervene
was deemed illegal by the referee and a penalty was duly awarded. Abraham
stepped up and put last week's miss from 12 yards at Tottenham behind him
with an expert finish into the right corner.
The windy conditions were playing their part in a feisty and
well-contested encounter and defender Nathan Fox had to time his sliding
challenge perfectly as he denied the ever-threatening Abraham.
Christie-Davies bent a free-kick narrowly over and Oxborough saved at the
second attempt from Abraham as Chelsea ended the half in the ascendancy.
== Second half ==
There was a change for Chelsea at the break as Under-16 forward Ike Ugbo
replaced Muheim, who picked up a knock in the first half. Ugbo was
involved immediately, advancing in the box and appearing to have his shirt
tugged by a covering defender, though the officials waved away the calls
for a second penalty.
The schoolboy striker was then denied by Oxborough as the young Blues
pushed for all three points after the restart, and the busy home
goalkeeper was again called into action on the hour mark as he saved from
Abraham and then gathered Tomori's header from the resultant corner.
George Couzens forced Thompson into a very good save down to his left and
Jake Simpson had a nicely-worked goal ruled out for offside as the contest
opened up with the visitors pushing forward for a winner. The elusive
third goal of the game did arrive eight minutes from time and it was the
in-form Abraham with his second of the match as substitute Faiq Bolkiah's
driven low cross from the right was palmed away by Oxborough but rebounded
off the striker and into the back of the net.
Edwards' team were forced into a spell of defending in difficult
conditions for the remaining few minutes, however they kept possession
intelligently and held on to three away points and a third successive
league victory. Next up for the youth team is a home clash with Aston
Villa next Saturday 11 October.
Earlier this week Abraham signed his first professional contract at the
club. The England Under-18 international now has 10 youth team goals to
his name already this season and recently made his European debut with Adi
Viveash's Under-19 side.
