Under-18s report: Fulham 0 Chelsea 0
24 Nov 2018
It was a morning of frustration and of failing to capitalise on numerous
opportunities for our youngsters as we dropped two points on the road in
the Under-18 Premier League.

Defenders Sam McClelland and Marcel Lavinier (pictured top) both struck
the woodwork before half-time, the latter's thundering effort crashing
against the crossbar, while substitute Armando Broja spurned the best
chance of the second period by firing wide of the far post with the
goalkeeper seemingly beaten.
The result, our first 0-0 in any competition for almost two years, brings
to an end an eight-game winning streak for Andy Myers's side and leaves
them third in the southern league table.
Myers made four changes from a comfortable away win at Newcastle last time
out. Tino Anjorin had been involved the previous evening for the
development squad in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham, while Jordan Aina and
Pierre Ekwah Elimby were on the bench.
Jake Askew came into the side between the sticks, protected by a back
three of Jack Wakely, Dynel Simeu and McClelland, while Lavinier and Ian
Maatsen operated in the wing-back positions. Clinton Mola partnered Jon
Russell in central midfield, with Thierno Ballo and Marcel Lewis just
behind central striker George Nunn.

Lavinier's collection of chances were spread throughout the 90 minutes and
his first came in the opening exchanges as the wing-back tested George
Wickens, the Fulham keeper, with a low angled drive from the right.
Moments later, the 17-year-old took aim from a more speculative position
but his left-footed effort dropped just wide with Wickens scrambling.
The hosts started the day two places but 10 points behind Myers's men,
though their starting 11 included plenty of individuals with the ability
to cause problems. Fabio Carvalho showed some nice early touches in and
around our 18-yard box, while one fizzing cross from the right wing
somehow eluded any teammate in white.
Chelsea pressure continued to build in momentum as the contest settled.
Lewis produced a neat turn to move away from his marker and into space 25
yards from goal but the forward's strike was delayed and eventually hit
Nunn on the way through.
With 18 minutes on the clock, the visitors pushed closer still and Fulham
had the woodwork to thank for keeping them on level terms. Maatsen floated
a corner in from the right and McClelland rose highest to meet it at the
back post, though the Northern Ireland Under-17 international's header was
pushed on to the post by the keeper and eventually gathered.

McClelland rises highest in the box to win a header
Fulham's ambition stunted as they dropped deeper and deeper to keep their
London rivals at bay, leaving Timmy Abraham, younger brother of our
on-loan striker Tammy, isolated up front. Lavinier's latest attempt after
half an hour was his best of the morning, a thunderous strike from the
edge of the box that flew through the air and crashed against the bar.
Wickens remained much the busier of the two shot-stoppers as the break
approached, diving low to his right to palm away Mola's powerful drive and
ensure parity was maintained at the midway interval.
However, the Blues continued to lack a quickness of thinking and a
deftness of touch in the second half. A neat move early after the restart
saw Nunn find Ballo's run with a clever flick off the outside of his boot
and the Austrian was racing clear on goal, though hesitancy proved costly
as Tristan Cover was given the time to get back and make an impressive
cover tackle. From the following corner, McClelland again won the header
but failed to hit the target.

Ballo tussles for possession of the ball on the wing
Lavinier's endeavours continued to place him into presentable positions
but the defender's finishing lacked the composure of a more attacking
player. He was released into an advanced area down the right after 56
minutes but screwed his shot well wide of the near post.
The contest became more stretched as the game wore on, Chelsea desperation
married with a Fulham feeling that they could find a sucker-punch on the
break to steal all three points. McClelland defended the box well as a
dangerous free-kick dropped invitingly into the middle, before Myers made
a swap up top to introduce Broja to proceedings.

Broja came off the bench and almost won it for Myers's men at the death
It was the substitute striker who fashioned the best opportunity of the
final 20 minutes and who ought to have sealed the victory for his side.
Teed up by Henry Lawrence, who did well to work the opening down the left,
the teenager shuffled the ball cleverly on to his favoured right foot but
his final finish was wayward and spun away from the far upright.
With Tottenham winners over Arsenal in another all-London meeting of the
top two, this was a chance for the Blues to close the gap at the top and
Myers will certainly be left wondering how his side failed to register a
goal for the first time since August. They have the chance to make amends
next weekend when Reading are the visitors to Cobham.
