Under-18s report: Chelsea 5 Swansea 0
Fri 26 Aug 2016
Chelsea Under-18s toiled for the first 45 minutes but came out firing
after the break with four goals in 23 minutes to secure a second home
victory of the season.
The Blues created the better chances in the first half but went in
goalless at the interval. Whatever manager Jody Morris said in the
changing room worked a treat as his players returned to the field in a
ruthless mood.
A brace from Martell Taylor-Crossdale, the first from the penalty spot,
alongside goals from Harvey St Clair, Luke McCormick and Charlie Brown did
the damage as our youngsters continued an unbeaten home record that
stretches 19 games across three separate seasons.
Morris was looking for a response from his players after a disappointing
performance and defeat last time out at Southampton. The manager made four
changes, two of which were enforced through international duty. George
McEachran and Marc Guehi missed the action on duty with England's Under-17
side, while Jared Thompson and Brown also dropped out.
Nathan Baxter was the replacement for Thompson in goal and he was
protected by a back four of Cole Dasilva, captain Josh Grant, Richard
Nartey and Juan Castillo.
Following a slight injury that sidelined him for the south coast trip,
Taylor-Crossdale returned to lead the line up front, supported in attack
by St Clair, Jacob Maddox and schoolboy Callum Hudson-Odoi. Tariq Uwakwe
partnered McCormick in central midfield.
On a gloriously sunny day at the training ground, the hosts controlled the
early proceedings. Maddox saw a penalty appeal waved away despite contact
seemingly being made by goalkeeper Ross Treacy before Uwakwe came close
with an effort that struck the inside of the post before being hacked
clear off the line by defender Mael Davies.
Without creating clear-cut chances, the visitors settled and grew in
confidence. Uwakwe saw a low strike blocked but it took 32 minutes for the
young Blues to genuinely cause concern for Treacy. Hudson-Odoi and Maddox
combined down the right before the latter's teasing low cross was sliced
wide.
Kieron Evans shot narrowly wide of the far post as the Swans demonstrated
their threat on the counter-attack before a break from the Blues carved
out an opportunity for St Clair. Maddox was involved again as he advanced
down the right and delivered for Tayor-Crossdale to tee up the winger,
though Treacy was quickly off his line to deny him.
After all the first half toiling in the baking afternoon heat, it took
just three minutes of the second period for Morris's men to find the
elusive breakthrough. The lively Hudson-Odoi was bundled over in the box
and Taylor-Crossdale stepped up to roll the ball into the net from 12
yards.
Within four minutes it was 2-0. The hosts stole possession in midfield
before Maddox glided towards goal with the ball at his feet, sliding a
pass forward for St Clair with perfect weighting and timing. St Clair did
the rest as he beat Treacy with a composed finish into the corner for his
third goal of the season.
Two further goals in two minutes put the game to bed for the Blues.
McCormick broke free down the left and delivered a perfect cross for
Taylor-Crossdale to turn in from close range before the midfielder got a
goal of his own moments later.
St Clair played in the overlapping substitute Reece James down the right
and he cut back cleverly before teeing up McCormick to strike the ball
beyond the despairing Treacy.
There was still 20 minutes remaining to add to the scoreline and Castillo
was denied by Treacy before substitute Brown notched his maiden Chelsea
goal since a summer move from Ipswich Town with a smart finish from
another St Clair assist.

Under-18s reaction: Home comforts
Sat 27 Aug 2016
Our youth team head into the international break with two wins and a
defeat from their opening three Under-18 Premier League matches as Jody
Morris's tenure as manager begins to take shape.
The youngsters recorded a 5-0 victory over Swansea City yesterday
afternoon at Cobham to bounce back in style following a disappointing
defeat at Southampton last weekend. After the win, Morris reflected on an
improved display from his players. However, he cited a theme that has
appeared throughout pre-season and in the early stages of this campaign,
urging his team to be even more ruthless in front of goal.
'We're not an academy that are used to losing games but when we have done
in the past we have certainly bounced back quickly and turned in some good
performances,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'It doesn't become a
regular occurrence so we stressed that to the players in training this
week.
'The scoreline looks great on paper but I felt we could have got towards
double figures if we were really on our game in the final third. We didn't
play particularly well before half-time but we should have been 4-0 up and
then we raised our game by about 20 per cent after the break. I don't want
to sound too downbeat after a 5-0 win but these are the standards we've
set over the last four or five years and we want to aim to reach those
levels.'
Despite an urge for further improvements down one end of the field, Morris
was pleased to see his side claim a first clean sheet of the campaign
following five goals conceded in their previous two matches.
'Josh Grant and Richard Nartey in particular needed that after last
weekend and Richard was class today. He won a lot of his aerial duels, put
his foot in and defended well so we didn't really look in too much
trouble.
'When you're able to add Nathan Baxter in between the sticks, you always
have a chance of getting a clean sheet because he's a top goalkeeper. He
showed that with his performances for us last season and being involved
with the first team this season is a clear sign of that as well.'
Winger Harvey St Clair scored one and made one in the second half,
following an opening weekend brace against Fulham. The 17-year-old
believes such a positive response from the Southampton defeat will send a
message to their rivals.
'It's good to put a stamp on the league by winning 5-0 and to go into the
international break with confidence,' St Clair said. 'I always set my
standards higher than the last game so I was a bit disappointed that I
only scored one but it's all about the team winning the game.
'We pressed quite well in the first half but needed to be more clinical in
the final third. We were probably taking too many touches on the ball and
I was guilty of that myself. We had to chase the game a little bit at 0-0
but I thought we were always in control.'
The result takes the youth team's unbeaten home record to 19 matches, a
run that spans two managers and three separate seasons. Our last defeat
suffered at Cobham came in April 2015 and Morris is clearly keen on
extending the run well into the current campaign.
'When you have a home record like that then it makes it a really tough
place for other teams to come and get a result. In previous years, we've
talked to the players about records and unbeaten runs to try to add an
extra element to the importance of the Saturday league games.
'We always try to score as many goals as possible and not losing at Cobham
is also a big thing, not just for us but for all of the age groups who
play here. It's something we're proud of and would like to continue for as
long as we can.'
The youth team return to action in the Under-18 Premier League on Saturday
10 September with a trip to Norwich City. Before then, our development
squad continue their Premier League 2 campaign with a trip to Manchester
United this Sunday 28 August. Kick-off at Leigh Sports Village is at
1.05pm and Chelsea TV will be screening the game live.
