UNDER-18S REPORT: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 2
Posted on: Sat 15 Feb 2014
== Summary ==
A young side featuring nine schoolboys fought back strongly to earn a
point at a windy Cobham as second-half goals from Renny Smith and Stephy
Mavididi were cancelled out by a strike from Jake Clarke-Salter and a
penalty from Tammy Abraham.
== Team news ==
There were seven schoolboys involved from the start for the youth team as
Joe Edwards [pictured above] took charge of the side, with the midfield
trio comprised entirely of Under-16s. Mukhtar Ali, Ruben Sammut and Isaac
Christie-Davies featured in the middle of the field, while Abraham led the
line up front, supported by captain Kasey Palmer and Reece Mitchell from
out wide.
Bradley Collins continued in goal, protected by a back four of Fikayo
Tomori, George Brady, Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva.
== First half ==
Both sides eased themselves into the game in blustery conditions at
Cobham, with schoolboy striker Abraham first to threaten as he had a shot
blocked well by George Dobson. Down the other end there was a competitive
contest emerging between winger Tyrell Robinson and Tomori, with both
players' strength and pace put to the test, though the duel was ended
prematurely after the defender injured himself during one tussle and was
forced to withdraw from proceedings.
Robinson continued to look dangerous for the visitors, skipping past a
couple of defenders before dragging a shot wide, while Palmer forced the
first save of the match from Ryan Huddart, who held a swirling free kick
from the left well.
Abraham, himself causing trouble for the Arsenal back four, went close
after 20 minutes, bringing a smart low save out of Huddart after Dasilva's
centre from the left, before Ali's deflected effort from distance looped
threateningly towards goal in the wind, though the goalkeeper held well
once more.
The young Blues were gradually growing into the game and looked the more
settled side as the half progressed, though the conditions didn't aid
their route to goal and the match remained scoreless at the interval.
== Second half ==
There was a change at the break from the hosts as Chike Kandi was
introduced in place of Christie-Davies, with the substitute leading the
line and Abraham switched to a position on the right flank. Abraham fired
narrowly wide of the near post and into the side netting after a bright
move down the right, before Arsenal grabbed the lead 11 minutes after the
restart.
A mistake at the back from Clarke-Salter gifted a chance to Renny Smith
and the former Chelsea schoolboy didn't pass up on the opportunity,
finishing smartly over the onrushing Collins to put the visitors ahead.
Chelsea responded as Sammut had a shot blocked well before Smith went
close again for the young Gunners, heading a corner from the right a
couple of feet over Collins's crossbar.
A recovering defender on the line denied substitute Kyle Scott, after the
midfielder latched on to a ball forward having made a clever run from
midfield, while Kandi tested the palms of Huddart with a half-volley from
the edge of the box.
However, the hosts were to be punished on the break as Arsenal extended
their advantage with 20 minutes remaining. Striker Stephy Mavididi got in
behind the defence and remained composed with Collins to beat, finishing
smartly down low beyond the goalkeeper.
Yet the Blues kept the pressure on and earned themselves a route back into
the game 10 minutes later. An inswinging corner from the left from Scott
was met powerfully by centre-back Clarke-Salter and his connection was
strong as he fired beyond Huddart to reduce the deficit.
That goal reinvigorated the hosts and they piled forward in attacking
waves as they sensed they could snatch a point from the match. Kandi fired
wide before a wonderful move resulted in a home penalty. Scott swept the
ball out left to Dasilva and the full-back's delivery was aimed in to
Abraham who, the referee adjudged, was nudged in the back as he challenged
for the high ball. The striker picked himself up and dispatched the
spot-kick confidently into the bottom right corner.
Scott had been influential since his introduction and continued to pull
the strings as his side looked for a winner in the final minutes, however
as the rain returned there was to be no further drama and both sides had
to settle for a share of the league points.
Next up for the youth team is a trip to Cardiff City in the FA Youth Cup
5th Round on Tuesday 18 February, a tie to be screened live on Chelsea TV.
