Under-18s report: Chelsea 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1
Sat, 28 Feb 2015
Our Under-18s came from behind to conclude their regional programme with a
London derby win at a drizzly Cobham.
Ryan Loft put Tottenham ahead from the penalty spot shortly before
half-time, however goals after the restart from substitute Jeremie Boga
and Ike Ugbo secured all three points for the Blues.
Joe Edwards' side will now join seven other sides, three more from the
south section and the top four in the north section, in the elite play-off
round to determine the national champions.
== Team news ==
There were four schoolboys in the starting team as Edwards made five
changes from last week's defeat to Reading. Josh Grant, Cole Dasilva and
Under-15 Dujon Sterling joined Ali Suljic in the back four, with regular
goalkeeper Bradley Collins between the sticks.
Kyle Scott captained the side in midfield alongside Ruben Sammut and
Mukhtar Ali, while Ike Ugbo led the line up front supported by Charlie
Wakefield and Hubert Adamczyk.
== First half ==
The opening period was one of limited opportunities, although Tottenham
enjoyed the better of the play as Marcus Edwards flashed a shot wide of
the far post and Kaziah Sterling shot over. Ali dragged an effort wide
after a home corner wasn't cleared to safety and Sammut's header brought a
routine save from Tom Glover before the game burst into life after half an
hour.
The lively Sterling burst into the box from the left channel and was
upended by his namesake in blue as the pair clashed into one another. The
collision resulted in a penalty awarded to the visitors but also an injury
to the Chelsea man, bringing his morning to an early conclusion. After a
four-minute delay, striker Ryan Loft stepped up and beat Collins with an
accurate drive into the bottom left corner.
The visitors remained in the ascendancy for the remainder of the half as
Charlie Hayford's inswinging free-kick floated just wide. Down the other
end set-piece from Scott flew harmlessly over Glover's crossbar.
== Second half ==
Chelsea were boosted by the introduction of Jeremie Boga at the break and
their second half performance was much improved as they played with a
higher intensity and quicker speed. However, Tottenham had two big
opportunities to double their advantage before the Blues comeback began
and Edwards' side had goalkeeper Collins to thank for two crucial saves.
First, the home stopper raced quickly off his line to thwart Sterling
after Suljic's short back-pass had gifted the forward an opportunity,
before Sterling teed up Loft but the goalkeeper again made the save by
standing tall.
The Blues put together their best move of the morning after an hour as
Adamczyk cut the ball back invitingly for the supporting Sammut, though
his strike flew over. Chelsea were soon level when after 68 minutes,
Boga's free-kick bent brilliantly over the wall and into the top corner,
beyond the despairing dive of Glover.
With parity restored, the hosts hunted for a late winner against their
London rivals. Another Boga free-kick was pushed behind well by Glover,
and the Spurs keeper twice denied Ugbo before finally being beaten by the
schoolboy striker. Sammut found the forward in behind with an excellent
forward pass and the Under-16 finished confidently into the far corner for
the winner.
Substitute Mason Mount brought an excellent diving stop from Glover and
Collins again intervened to deny Armani Daly's low effort in stoppage
time, as our youth team held on to all three points in their final game of
the regional programme. As south section winners, the Blues will be joined
by seven others in the elite play-off round next month.
== Reaction ==
Assistant manager Jody Morris reflected afterwards on a pleasing win to
end the regional section of the campaign, but he highlighted goalkeeper
Bradley Collins as significant to the team coming out of the game with
three points. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a
good win for us.
'Tottenham needed to win more than we did but we wanted to finish this
part of the season on a high. It was a scrappy first half in which neither
side was really on top and we felt that although we were in their half, we
weren't creating clear-cut chances and were probably dwelling on the ball
a bit too much.
'At half-time, we spoke about seeing a reaction from the players and the
opportunity to bring on Jeremie Boga in an Under-18 league game is always
a big plus. It's great to see him back out on the pitch after injury and
you saw his quality with the goal. He was instrumental in firstly getting
us back into the game but then also putting us firmly on the front foot.
'The first thing we said after the game was how much we owed the three
points to Brad; he made two amazing saves one-on-one and, as much as we
played better in the second half, we did gift them a couple of very clear
chances. The fact that Brad has stopped both of them is the reason we were
able to go on and win the game.'
Our Academy begin a busy week on Monday when Adi Viveash's Under-21s
travel to Liverpool in the Under-21 Premier League, a game that is being
screened live on Chelsea TV. Then on Thursday, Edwards' team meet
Tottenham again in the semi-final first leg of the FA Youth Cup at White
Hart Lane. That game is also live on Chelsea TV, while supporters can
purchase tickets on the door on the night.
