Under 18s report: Chelsea 2 Leicester City 1

Sat, 6 Dec 2014

Our Under-18s triumphed against Leicester at Cobham this afternoon
(Saturday).

Isaac Christie-Davies put the hosts in front after 20 minutes before
Charly Musonda doubled the advantage five minutes into the second half.
Leicester fought back and reduced the deficit quickly courtesy of Brandon
Fox's fierce drive, however it was the Blues who claimed all three league
points.

== Team news ==

Joe Edwards made three changes from the side that opened the FA Youth Cup
campaign with a 2-0 victory at Leeds United in midweek, with Kasey Palmer,
Ruben Sammut and Isaac Christie-Davies all returning to start. Sammut
began alongside Kyle Scott in central midfield, with an unchanged back
five behind consisting of goalkeeper Bradley Collins, Ola Aina, Fikayo
Tomori, captain Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva.

Palmer was joined in an attacking support cast by Christie-Davies and
Musonda, while top goalscorer Tammy Abraham led the line up front.

== First half ==

It was first versus second in the south section of the Under-18 Premier
League as a frosty Cobham played home to the youth team's final home game
of the calendar year. We struggled to settle in possession in the opening
20 minutes, which resulted in a start in which both sides exchanged
periods of control and promise.

Keenan King fashioned a chance for himself with a good run and received a
pass forward from Foxes skipper Darnell Johnson, however his low shot
across goal trickled beyond the far post, while Abraham fired over the bar
down the opposite end.

Brandon Fox drilled a strike inches over Collins' crossbar after the Blues
had failed to sufficiently clear the danger from a deep free kick, before
the game's first moment of real quality broke the deadlock.

Scott broke forward from midfield and manoeuvred himself into enough space
20 yards out to execute a brilliant dinked ball forward over the top of
the Leicester defence to find the run of Christie-Davies. The midfielder
let the ball bounce and then matched Scott's deftness as he lobbed the
stranded Max Smith-Varnham to net his third goal in the last six league
outings.

Collins continued to command his penalty area and provide the spark for
our counter-attacking threat, launching forward forays with quick thinking
and precise distribution. He was forced into a strong low save to deny
Matt Miles after 30 minutes but our threat grew as the half wore on.

Abraham headed narrowly over from Aina's right-sided cross before thumping
the outside of the near post with a powerful shot, while Palmer brought a
save from Smith-Varnham following neat build-up play involving Aina and
Musonda as the half reached a conclusion.

Yet there was still time remaining for a big penalty shout from the hosts
as a clear handball on the line was waved away by the officials.

== Second half ==

It didn't take long after the restart for the Blues to grab the crucial
second goal and double our advantage.

Aina's hooked cross from the right appeared too strong but was gathered by
Dasilva and the left-back kept his composure to find the supporting
Musonda. The young Belgian had held his run well and arrived at the
perfect time, stroking the ball beyond the despairing dive of the
goalkeeper.

The two-goal cushion lasted just four minutes as the Foxes fought back.
Johnson got in behind down the right flank and delivered a dangerous
centre across goal that caused problems for the home defenders, before
Fox's powerful strike from 25 yards arrowed beyond Collins via a
significant deflection.

That goal gave the visitors renewed hope in the encounter although their
goalkeeper was forced into a couple of crucial stops. Firstly, he got down
quickly to gather from Musonda's 20-yard drive before thwarting Palmer at
the near post with an excellent stop with his legs.

Edwards' side worked hard off the ball to keep their shape and restrict
Leicester chances. Collins pushed Rowe's looping header away before the
wideman had a great opportunity as a bouncing ball deceived the defenders
but fired over from a tight angle. Tomori was denied by Smith-Varnham late
on but the Blues were not to be prevented from securing the victory.

Next up for the youth team is their final league action of the calendar
year as they travel to West Ham next Saturday. Before that, the Under-19s
conclude the group phase of their UEFA Youth League campaign on Wednesday
as they entertain Schalke at Cobham, with top spot in the group up for
grabs for both sides.

== Manager reaction ==

Edwards reflected after the game on a demanding week for his youngsters
and emphasised his satisfaction with two victories in five days in the
league and Youth Cup.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'To come away from a
knockout cup tie and a top-of-the-table clash this week with two wins is
really pleasing for us. Obviously we want to finish right at the top-end
of the league because we want to ensure we're in the top league when the
split happens later in the season so today there was a big emphasis from
us on the result as well.

'Leicester are right up there at the top of the table with us and their
defensive record is outstanding, which we saw ourselves when we played up
there earlier on in the season. We scored a good goal through Isaac; it
was a great bit of skill from Kyle Scott to play him in and a good finish.
Isaac performed well today and his work off the ball in terms of putting
tackles in and pressing was very good. He and Ruben Sammut were really
good in midfield for us today.

'We were good in the early part of the second half and obviously got
another goal but our defending for their goal was disappointing and then
we're right up against it again at 2-1. It was a different side of
development for the boys today where you have to get used to decisions
breaking up the flow of the game and going against you and we had to show
good discipline.'

Edwards also had praise for Clarke-Salter following another solid
defensive display at the end of a week in which the centre-back signed his
first professional contract with the club.

'We've had a lot of good performances this season in the youth team and
the league table reflects that,' he said.

'Jake, as captain, has been a massive part of that and he's really grown
as a leader as he's got used to the role. I think he's probably in his
best spell of form of the season and we're delighted for him to sign his
professional deal.'
