Under-18s report: Brighton 2 Chelsea 1
Sat, 18 Oct 2014
A young Under-18 side featuring seven schoolboys across the 90 minutes
went down to a narrow 2-1 league defeat on their travels to Brighton this
morning (Saturday). Isaac Christie-Davies equalised for the young Blues
early after the restart, however it wasn't enough to prevent the hosts
claiming all three points with a strike midway through the second period
from Connor Tighe.
Joe Edwards made four changes from the side that started last week's
amazing 12-2 win over Aston Villa, with Jeremie Boga and Jay Dasilva
involved with the Under-21s and Dominic Solanke on the first team bench at
Crystal Palace. Dasilva was replaced at left-back by his younger brother
Cole Dasilva, who joined fellow schoolboy Josh Grant in a back four also
comprising Mukhtar Ali and captain Jake Clarke-Salter. Jared Thompson,
another Under-16, remained in goal.
Ruben Sammut, Christie-Davies and Kyle Scott continued in midfield, with
Miro Muheim coming into the side in attack to join Charlie Wakefield. Ike
Ugbo replaced the injured Tammy Abraham up front.
Edwards' side had faced the young Seagulls at their new training base in
pre-season, winning 4-2 in August, so both teams were familiar with one
another coming into this latest contest. An even opening period that was
short on clear-cut opportunities at either end burst to life after half an
hour as the hosts went in front through striker Jordan Maguire-Drew.
Chelsea reacted well and, after a reassessment at the interval, quickly
restored parity in the game through Brighton-born birthday boy
Christie-Davies. A bright move and clever interchange between him and
striker Ugbo fashioned the chance and Christie-Davies finished well for
his first goal of the season.
Several more schoolboys entered the fray for the visitors as Trevoh
Chalobah, Mason Mount and Jacob Maddox all made their first youth team
appearances of the season. Yet it was to be a superb strike from Tighe
that won the game and earned Brighton all three league points. The
midfielder's effort from 35 yards flew over Thompson and into the back of
the net after 65 minutes.
The Blues pushed for another leveller as the final whistle approached,
though they were unable to find reward for their endeavours and will now
look to bounce back next weekend when they host Fulham at Cobham.
Goalscorer Christie-Davies has also put pen to paper on his first
professional contact at the club. The midfielder has been at Chelsea since
joining from Brighton as an Under-11.
Edwards reflected afterwards on a game a bit below par but said he was
pleased with so many young players' involved at this stage of the
campaign. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a bit
of a comedown after last week but the game today lacked quality as a whole
and we lacked a spark on the ball.
'We played Brighton in pre-season and got a really good football match so
we knew they liked to get the ball down and play. We did a lot of work in
the week on how we were going to set up and stop them building from the
back and that was probably the most pleasing aspect of the game for us. We
were well-organised and didn't let them have any rhythm on the ball but
our own quality on the ball was what cost us.
'It was good to have Trevoh Chalobah back on the pitch because he's had a
few injuries and nice for Mason and Jacob too, so it was a good
opportunity for some of the younger players after a few weeks when we've
been very strong. Tammy was a loss for us after the form he's been in
recently and the presence he gives us but we still had a strong team so it
was a bit of a disappointing morning.'
The manager did emphasise some positives to take away, however, including
the performance of Christie-Davies and the promotion to Under-21 and first
team duty respectively this weekend for two first-years, Jay Dasilva and
Dominic Solanke.
'Isaac scored his goal and he was probably the best player on the pitch
today. He's had a good week personally and obviously being a Brighton boy
it was nice for him today to score. Jay has moved up with the Under-21s
this weekend, which is great for him, and obviously to have a first-year
scholar on the bench for the first team today is fantastic.
'We've had a few of our key players a little bit off the pace today and
when that happens it can be difficult. We had a game a couple of weeks ago
at Norwich where we didn't play great but got the three points; today it
went the other way, where we didn't play great but also didn't do enough
to get a win or a draw.'
