The Debrief: Right-sided overloads and midfield control key to dominant
victory

We examine the notable statistics and relevant themes from last night's
victory at Tottenham, with the Blues' strategy effective from the first
whistle...


We were at it right from the off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,
successfully pinning Spurs back by controlling possession and turning the
ball over high up the pitch.


In the opening half-hour we had a 71.7 per cent share of possession and
registered a 93 per cent pass completion rate. Jorginho's converted
penalty was our fourth attempt.


Our threat down the right was especially noticeable. Of our 146 completed
passes in the final third over the 90 minutes, Reece James, Cesar
Azpilicueta and Callum Hudson-Odoi accounted for 59 of them, with Mason
Mount, who regularly drifted wide right, recording a game-high 27.

With Azpi pushing up from the right side of the back three, James often
found himself as an auxiliary winger. With Mount flitting between the
lines, the overloads we created in that part of the pitch were a regular
source of concern for the hosts. Indeed, it was an Azpilicueta pass into
that channel that eventually led to Timo Werner being felled in the game's
decisive moment.


In total, 50 per cent of our attacking moves came down the right-hand
side, with 26 per cent down the left and 24 per cent through the middle.

== Central midfield control ==


Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic successfully dictated the tempo off our play
and stopped the in-form Tanguy Ndombele having any significant impact on
the game.


Only Azpilicueta (7.3 per cent) spent more time in possession than
Jorginho (6.8 per cent) and Kovacic (6.5 per cent), with that trio also
completing the most passes.


The next most involved player was Mount (5.7 per cent) and his three key
passes was a joint-high figure along with James. Jorginho recorded two, as
well as scoring his fifth spot-kick of the season.

It was only really in the final 15 minutes that our dominance waned. In
that period, we lost possession seven times having only done so on 12
occasions in the opening 75 minutes.


Five of Tottenham's seven attempts were in the final quarter-of-an-hour.
Their two on-target efforts were from outside the box, with Carlos
Vinicius' late header their solitary big chance created.


Of our 16 attempts, two were on target and seven were blocked. The
starting front three each had three attempts.

Even without the penalty, not on this map, our expected goals figure was
higher than Tottenham's


== Alonso impact ==


Though Marcos Alonso did not make a major contribution in the final third
as he has been known to do against Spurs previously, he recorded
Chelsea-high figures for clearances (three), interceptions (three) and
ball recoveries (10), and game-high numbers for successful dribbles (four)
and aerial duels won (six).


When it came to tackles, nobody bettered Toni Rudiger's three won out of
three attempted.


The collective defensive effort meant Thomas Tuchel is the first Chelsea
boss to record three consecutive clean sheets at the start of his tenure
since Jose Mourinho in 2004. The defeat inflicted back-to-back home league
defeats on our former manager for the first time in his career.

80% - Of all players to score at least 10 Premier League goals, Jorginho
has the highest percentage of his total coming via penalties (8/10).

Having gone over two years since winning a league game 1-0 away from home,
we have now managed that feat twice in three games on the road.


We are now five unbeaten in the league against Tottenham and have won
back-to-back away games against them for the first time since a run of
three between 2004 and 2005.
