The USTA has named Pat McEnroe the USA’s Davis Cup captain for another year,
which we’re all elated about. “Patrick McEnroe has done a terrific job over
the past four years as our Davis Cup Captain, and we are fortunate to have
such a capable and dynamic Captain going forward,” said Franklin Johnson,
President-Elect, USTA. “Patrick’s keen understanding of the game and his
dedication to creating a team environment have played a key role in the U.S.
returning to the Davis Cup Final for the first time since 1997.” McEnroe’s
dedication to doing what is best for the team lead him in his decision to
name 20th seed James Blake to this year’s first round team over 17th seed
Robby Ginepri.

The USA is currently seeded seventh in the Davis Cup rankings, previously
eighth, behind the number-one Croatia and number-two Spain. In 2005, USA lost
to Croatia in the first round, and Croatia’s run took them to the final and
they brought home the title. In 2004 in Seville, Spain, USA lost to Spain 2-3
in the final. It has been since 1995 that the USA has brought home the title,
but we know Captain McEnroe is working hard with his team to bring it home
this year.

“My experiences as Davis Cup Captain have been among the most challenging
and exciting in my career,” said McEnroe. “I thank the USTA for its
continued support and thank our players for their ongoing commitment to the
U.S. Davis Cup effort.” McEnroe played for three years in doubles for Davis
Cup, and took on coaching 5 years later in 2001. His players are also very
committed to being a part of the Davis Cup team, as well. As Andy says, “
victory comes one match at a time."

2006 Australian Open Doubles Champions Bob and Mike Bryan spoke with Davis
Cup radio on January 30th with great pride for the USA team. “We treat Davis
Cup doubles like a Gland Slam,” they noted. “We usually can’t walk by the
time Sunday of Davis Cup comes around.” We know how hard they play in Slams
as they have made it to the finals of the last five Grand Slams.

James Blake, Andy Roddick, and the Bryan Brothers will be taking on Romania
in La Jolla, California, on February 10-12, 2006 with their Captain, Patrick
McEnroe.
“Patrick has reignited our Davis Cup effort in the U.S.,” said Arlen
Kantarian, Chief Executive, Pro Tennis, USTA. “Patrick’s unique style as a
leader - and as a person - has attracted and connected with a special group
of young American players. We’re thrilled to have him continue as Captain.”
So are we!

Go Team USA!
