Billy Gillispie has agreed to become Texas Tech』s head basketball coach, a
university source told Yahoo! Sports. The school is expected to issue a press
release later today to announce the hiring. A news conference is tentatively
scheduled for Wednesday.
The source said Gillispie's contract is for five years with a base salary of
$800,000 per year. That figure does not include potential incentives.
Gillispie is believed to have been the only coach seriously targeted for the
job, although a separate university source said the school reached out
informally to North Texas coach Johnny Jones.
Gillispie, 51, turned around struggling programs at Texas-El Paso and Texas
A&M before being hired to replace Tubby Smith at Kentucky in the spring of
2007. Gillispie coached the Wildcats for two seasons. He was the SEC Coach of
the Year in 2007-08 but was fired the following year after failing to make
the NCAA tournament.
