In a move that would further bolster their lineup, the Angels are closing in
on acquiring Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler, a source told MLB.com
Wednesday. Neither club has confirmed the report.
Kinsler, who will make $11 million in 2018, would need to waive his no-trade
clause to be dealt to the Angels, according to MLB Network insider Joel
Sherman. Sherman added in a Wednesday report that it's believed only the
Angels are a "near-certain yes right now."
Other clubs that have been linked to the 12-year second baseman this
offseason include the Mets and Brewers. MLB.com's Jason Beck reported the
Tigers may have apprehension in a deal with the Mets due to their lack of
prospect depth.
Kinsler indicated to MLB.com in September that he would be willing to waive
his no-trade clause, depending on the Tigers' rebuilding plans and the chance
to play for a contender. The Angels may fit that bill, having traded for
Justin Upton last summer and signed coveted two-way Japanese star Shohei
Ohtani earlier this month.
And with Kaleb Cowart currently listed as the Angels' starting second
baseman, Kinsler, a four-time All-Star, would be an upgrade despite coming
off arguably the worst season of his career. In 2017, Kinsler, 35, hit a
career-low .236, though he added 22 homers and 52 RBIs.
