Something New
10/02/2007:
Justine defeated Tatiana Golovin in the quarterfinals on Friday 6-2 3-6 6-3,
but this was no routine win. The debonair Belgian wants to expand her stylish
repertoire to newer heights.
"Justine really surprised me. I remember the match we played against each
other and even the ones in which I watched her last year, she wasn't playing
like this. Today she took the ball early, did volley serves, return volleys.
It destabilized me at first. After, I got used to it but her offensive style
hindered me. I'm am going to try to take some inspiration from that" -
Tatiana Golovin
Justine's interpretation of modern attacking tennis.
JH: I've really improved my attacking game, even since last year. I have to
persevere with that because I realise players don't like pressure being put
on them. I'm also hoping to bring something new to the women's game in
playing like that. But it's also a case of economising my energy. I feel I
express myself well on court and now I have improved in a positive aspect.
Are you going to keep playing like this in the next matches?
JH: Last year I felt something happened in Wimbledon so I tried to put
everything into place in Madrid . That’s the kind of tennis I have to play.
But it’s not always easy because you always have to be at your best.
Do you play like this naturally or do you still need to concentrate?
JH: In my head I have to tell myself; let go, but concerning my automatic
reflexes, certain things are in place. I haven't completely changed
everything yet, but I'm certainly heading that way. At some times it works
better than others but today, in the last three games, you can clearly see
that it's what made the difference.
How do you feel physically?
JH: I don't have any major injury. I am a bit sore here and there. But it's
normal because we’re playing indoors and it’s more restrictive for the
joints. I feel good, I feel that it's evolving."

Lucie Safarova?
JH: It's not a tricky match in the sense that, at this stage of the
competition, anything can happen. But it's a dangerous player. She is young,
on the rise and did an exceptional Australian tour. She takes a lot of risks,
tries a great deal of things. It will be a good test playing against someone
who will have nothing to loose.
Safarova is left-handed.
JH: It's special. You're less used to it. Safarova is a hard hitter, she
takes a lot of initiatives and risks, she doesn’t think twice. I will have
to slightly adjust to her returns. I'm going to try and forget what's
happening on the other side of the net. If I do things the right way, usually
it goes smoothly.
Justine takes on Czech Lucie Safarova 14:00 hrs (Paris CET) today at the Gaz
de France. Eurosport will have live coverage. The Tennis Channel in the
United States will broadcast it. International WTA broadcasters will show it
tape delayed. Please consult your local cable tv listings for specific air
dates in your city.
