Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland (brain surgery) will begin facing live

pitching soon.

Westmoreland underwent a major surgical procedure last year to remove a

cavernous malformation on his brain stem. He's been taking batting practice

for the past several days and should gain clearance to begin participating in

simulated games shortly. "They know I’m ready, and I know I’m ready," said

the 21-year-old outfielder. "I’m physically and mentally ready — whether I

hit the ball or not — to get in the batter’s box again.
