ROGERS CUP: Match Du Jour!
21/08/2005:
The most appealing, and highly anticipated match in Toronto, featuring the
2003 Rogers Cup champion Justine, and the 2004 winner Amelie Mauresmo was
played Saturday night. Two all court styled flair, 1-handed backhand grooved,
and French speaking players displayed what's been missing all summer long in
the hardcourt season; a sense of real occasion. Justine's superiority out
shined, and yet again defeated Amelie 7-5 3-6 6-1.
Last year Justine defeated Amelie at the Olympics for the gold medal, this
was their most recent meeting. Justine says that every match she plays is
different, and the start of this semi-final was true to her philosophy. After
struggling with 7 doublefaults in a set the previous night, she played a
flawless game racing off 3-1 to Amelie's dismay. The Henin-Hardenne service
percentage was a high of 72% throughout this first set. Things were looking
very deja vu Olympics 2004 for Mauresmo as she was retreating far beyond the
baseline unable to touch any of Justine's return. At 4-2 the Belgian felt
confident enough, and went for far too much enabling the French woman to get
back into the match with some very nice shot making. Brilliant exchanges
highlighted the next games with the crowd absorbed in the ebb and flow of the
match. As soon as Justine fell one game behind at 4-5 she shifted up gears
and took control of the set to close it out at 7-5 in 47 minutes.
The second set started with Justine in total control as Amelie looked very
passive, but luck was on her side. Three netcords came Mauresmo's way, one
which ended in as a drop-shot halted the direction of the match. Justine a
little off put, then lost her momentum to carve lines, and design winners in
rallies. Her service game dropped, and Amelie took full advantage of the
obvious drop in energy levels. 3-6 Justine lost the 2nd set in 48 minutes.
The third set started out with Amelie leading the way at 0-1. Things may have
seemed bleak, but that simply isn't Justine's way. She fought back harder,
dedicated, and focused. Tennis is as mental, as it is emotional, and all it
seemed to take is one off putting line call against Amelie to have her
clouded for the rest of the set. Justine ran off to the finish line at 6-1 in
33 minutes.
Final Score 7-5 3-6 6-1 in 2Hrs 28mins.
Next up for Justine is Kim Clijsters. This will be their 17th meeting; the
previous being the Australian Open 2004. Their last seven matches were all
finals, with Justine only losing two. The new modern tennis classic of the
all Belgian final returns, and Sunday looks to be the ray of sunshine that
has been missing all week long in Toronto.
