Rehabbing Chien-Ming Wang helps Syracuse Chiefs to sixth-straight win,
6-4 over Rochester

The end-game for veteran pitcher Chien-Ming Wang during his rehab stay
with the Syracuse Chiefs is to keep stretching himself until his reach
extends back to Washington.

Based upon his outing against Rochester on Monday afternoon, he could
soon be ready to grasp a Major League roster spot again.

Wang flirted with a complete game against the Red Wings, scattering 11
hits and four earned runs across eight innings to carry the Chiefs to
a 6-4 triumph over the visitors at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Wang was in far more control than the scoreboard indicated. He barely
broke a sweat with 84 total pitches, 61 for strikes. His sinker was
irresistible through the first half of the game, and he induced 14
groundouts compared to five flyouts.

Manager Tony Beasley had him on a 105-pitch limit, which looked like
more than enough until the Red Wings chased him with a pair of hits
to open the ninth.

“He’s continued to get built back up with his pitch count,’’
Beasley said. “He’s doing what he’s does. It’s good to see he

Wang, a former workhorse for the New York Yankees, has not pitched
for Washington this season because of a left hamstring injury incurred
during spring training. Monday was his fourth minor-league start, and
second for Syracuse.

Wang earned a win against the Durham Bulls on Wednesday, throwing 89
pitches in seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.

“I felt good. I threw the ball good,’’ Wang said through an
interpreter Monday. “It’s coming back. I feel the sinker angle,
I can control more to the end (of the game).’

The win was Syracuse’s sixth in a row, a season-high. Corey Brown
and Seth Bynum each hammered solo homers for Syracuse, and Xavier Paul
produced three hits. The Chiefs broke open the contest with three runs
in the sixth and two in the seventh.

“Everybody has been doing a real good job of putting runs on the
board,’’ Paul said. “I think it’s just staying focused, every
inning, every pitch of the ball game, knowing when we walk into the
box as a player, you can get the job done.’’

Wang got his infield into the game right away, enticing Rochester’s
hitters into spraying hoppers at the defense. Wang shrugged off the
few that got through, getting the Red Wings to slap into three double
plays.

“There were a few times he got into tough jams. He handled the situation
like a veteran pitcher, used his sinker to his advantage,’’ Paul said.
“He did what we expected him to do. He knows how to pitch. That’s why
he’s been around so long.’’

Wang, 31, put that savvy on display in the late innings, when his sinker
lost some of its break. He started leaning more on his curve and changeup,
a Plan B that convinced Beasley that Wang deserved to keep pushing to
the finish line.

“I think he made some adjustments mid-game,’’ Beasley said.

Wang could continue to be a work-in-progress when he returns to
Washington. The Nationals’ sound starting rotation has closed off
all job openings there for now, so Wang might have to take innings
wherever he can find them.

“Right now, I just have to wait for the decision (to be recalled),’’
he said. “I just need to get myself ready. Once I get up there, I want
to get myself ready physically and mentally.’

Nationals assistant general manager Bob Boone, who was at Monday’s
game, said he expects the parent club to find room for him somewhere.

is him being completely healthy. That’s what he’s all about. I think
he’ll get better in the next couple of weeks.’’

Syracuse’s victory was its seventh straight over Rochester this year,
and continued the Chiefs’ run of flexing their muscles against fellow
struggling teams. Before sweeping the four-game set with the Red Wings
(14-23), Syracuse (17-21) took three of four from lowly Durham.

“We were the bottom of the barrel. Those teams could beat us as well,’’
Beasley said. “Every team you play is formidable. We’ve played solid
defense and pitched well, and allowed our offense time to get going.
The momentum is important.’’
