Gustavo Kuerten became the first tennis player to receive Brazil’s highest
prize in sports, awarded the Cruz do Mérito Desportivo (Sports Worth Cross)
on Wednesday night at the Ministry of Sports in Brasilia.

Brazilian Sport Minster Orlando Silva Jr., who presented the medal to the
three-time Roland Garros champion, said: “Guga is not only a great name of
Brazilian sports, but also a great reference in international sports. His
example on and off the court will for sure inspire our generation.”

“It’s quite amazing to receive a medal from Brazilian people,” said the
former ATP World Tour Champion. “This event represents the potential, the
energy of our people and I’d like to share this prize with lots of people. I
took for granted Brazilian potential. That’s why I will work hard to
increase tennis in Brazil.”
