Petra Kvitova returns to the Roland-Garros practice courts

One day before she announces the date of her competitive return, the Czech
went through her paces on the Parisian clay.
There could surely be no gladder sight at Roland-Garros right now – nor
anywhere else on Planet Tennis, truth be told – than that which was glimpsed
here on the practice courts on Thursday: a smiling Petra Kvitova going
through her paces on the Parisian clay, on the brink of resuming her playing
career following the knife attack at her home last December.
Whether that competitive resumption will happen at this edition of the French
Open or may yet be a few more weeks away is a matter which the two-time
Wimbledon champion will confirm on Friday. But for now it was pleasure enough
to see the 27-year-old Czech striking the ball on Grand Slam territory once
more, having flown in to the French capital on Wednesday. Her compatriot
Lucie Safarova reflected how many felt, immediately wrapping her Fed Cup
team-mate and friend in an emotional hug of welcome.
Kvitova, who reached the last four at Roland-Garros in 2012, was stabbed in
the left hand – her racket hand – by an intruder in her apartment in
Prostejov on December 20th. Surgeons spent almost four hours repairing
tendons and nerves, and Kvitova herself said she was “lucky to be alive”.
Her doctors initially thought she would be unable to hold a racket for three
months, and believed she would not be back on the practice court before
summer. Earlier this year she said: “My perspective on life has changed a
lot and I am doing everything to give myself a second chance to be back on
the court.”
But it was only at the start of this month that she posted a photograph on
social media of herself on court in Monaco, announcing that she had resumed
practice. And it was just two days ago that her spokesman pronounced her “on
track” to play at Wimbledon, starting on 3rd July, with a last-minute
decision to be made about participation at Roland-Garros.
For those wondering about the relevance, if any, of the WTA Special Ranking
rule, it turns out that for Kvitova another WTA statute has greater weight.
The Top 10 List Rule applies as follows.
Kvitova finished 2016 ranked No.11. But Serena Williams opted out as a
designated Top 10 player under the Years of Service Rule, so Kvitova was
elevated to the Top 10 List. As such, she will be accepted into the main draw
of any 2017 WTA tournament she enters by the entry deadline, regardless of
her ranking. She can also receive unlimited wildcards in singles and doubles
as a Year-End Top 10 player; and as a former Grand Slam champion, she has
also earned unlimited singles wildcard nominations.
So now we know. And whenever her return, one fact is beyond doubt – Petra
Kvitova is well and truly on her way back.
