Elbow doom: Pedro Martinez says Masahiro Tanaka is not healthy

Pedro Martinez is not an orthopedic surgeon, but he's talking in the media
like he is. No one outside of an orthopedist, or Masahiro Tanaka himself, has
as much insight regarding what the New York Yankees ace is going through
right now as Martinez does. Speaking with Adam Schein on MLB Network Radio on
Wednesday afternoon, Martinez said Tanaka looks unhealthy to him, and doesn't
expect his right elbow to be right all season. Tanaka has avoided Tommy John
elbow ligament replacement surgery because several different doctors have
given the medical opinion that he could pitch through the small tear in his
UCL. Martinez says he can tell from watching Tanaka in spring training that
he's being tentative because he's probably worried about tearing the ligament
completely — which probably is going to happen someday. It's just a matter
of when.

The Yankees used to be Pedro's daddy when he pitched for the Boston Red Sox.
Now he's their doctor. Via the New York Daily News:

"Unless they come up with a magic trick to actually get him better during the
season, I just don't see him completely healthy all year," said Martinez, who
is now an MLB Network analyst.

Losing Tanaka would be critical, said Martinez. He calls the pitcher "the
biggest key for the Yankees. I don't think they can afford to lose Tanaka."

Tanaka might not have looked 100 percent "right" this spring, and his
velocity is down — he says it's because he's working on a second, two-seam
fastball that isn't thrown as hard as a four-seamer — but his results look
very Tanaka: 1.74 ERA, 10 1/3 innings, six hits allowed, one walk and 12
strikeouts. Don't believe it, Pedro says.

"Tanaka's not healthy right now because I believe Tanaka is hesitant to let
it go," he said.

"He's hanging all those breaking balls he's throwing. The only pitch he's
committing to is the split-finger and his problems are actually in a place
where you don't need to put any more stress, which is the elbow. And he's
hesitant."

Martinez compiled 2,827 innings and 3,154 strikeouts over his major league
career. He might be as good of a pitcher as ever was, and he understands
pitching just the same. He might not be a doctor, but if anybody would know a
tentative pitcher when he sees one, it's Pedro. That said, all of the above
still might be true:

‧ Tanaka is pitching tentatively.

‧ He's not healthy.

‧ His velocity won't recover to previous levels.

‧ His UCL will tear completely this season.

‧ It might not tear, and he might make it through the season anyway.

‧ He still might pitch at an All-Star level because he's that good.

‧ His UCL will tear next season or the one after or the one after, like what
happened to Adam Wainwright and others.

The idea, probably, is to get through at least 2017, after which Tanaka has
an opt-out clause in his contract with the Yanks. It seems like a long time
from now.

And if Tommy John happens after 2017, the Tanaka and the Yankees will worry
about it then.
